We are Superstars!!
Tuesday, May 16 - Friday, May 19
Join an interactive week of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
Enjoy hands-on activities and fun STEM challenges for the whole family!
This FREE event is sponsored by the Stevens Creek Makerspace, a PTO-funded program.
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. During STEM Week, we will turn the GLC into a big makerspace where students can experience hands-on activities that focus on critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation.
A makerspace is a place where like-minded individuals come together to work on projects while sharing ideas, equipment/tools, and knowledge. It helps develop a framework that fosters, enables, and encourages students to move beyond technology consumption and into creation.
Due to space limitations and resource restrictions at our school, we currently only have a makercart -- the mobile version of a makerspace. Using a cart, parent volunteers bring the supplies into the classrooms for STEM activities.

Students, staff, and their families will be able to visit various stations or activities throughout the week. There are three types of stations: free-play, make-and-take, and demos.
Free-play: Where students can be creative with the supplies. Examples include LEGO, straws and connectors, and Kapla planks.
Make-and-take: Where students create something that they take home. Examples include catapults and toothpick structures.
Demos (or demonstrations): Where students can watch a 3D printer at work or learn how to use a microscope.
STEM challenges are meant to ignite students' interests in STEM. By participating in friendly competitions, team members get to challenge their problem-solving skills as well as their team's ability to work together ... in a very fun way!
Every day during STEM Week, there will be various group challenges. If you're interested, sign up here.
To ensure everyone's safety, all available activities during STEM Week are dependent on the number of volunteers that we get. This applies both during the day when students visit with their class, or after school when students visit with their families.
The more volunteers we have, the more stations there will be so please consider signing up here. If you want to volunteer with your child's class, simply check the form as it is updated in real time.
If you like the idea of a STEM program in our school and classrooms, please consider partnering with us!
For the next school year, we are looking to fill two roles: (1) Makerspace Parent Consultant, or MPC; and (2) parent mentors.
Makerspace Parent Consultant (MPC): As an MPC, you will help come up with grade-appropriate STEM activities -- or improve the ones we already have -- and put together instructions for parent mentors. This is best if you don't have time to come to school to volunteer, but would like to help behind the scenes. You do not need to be cleared to be an MPC.
Parent Mentors: As a parent mentor, you will lead fun STEM activities in the classroom. You will need to be cleared to take this role (see * below). This is best if you like to work directly with the students without planning the activities.
All instructions and supplies will be provided.
Monthly time commitment is 60-80 minutes: 5-15 minutes reviewing the activity, 50 minutes class time, and 5-15 minutes cleaning up.
Work with the teacher to schedule your own classroom STEM Day!
If this sounds good to you, please email us at makerspace@stevenscreekpto.org as soon as possible.
*If you are not yet cleared but would like to be a parent mentor next year, we suggest that you start working on the volunteer requirements soon as the process may take a while. CUSD requirements can be found here.
