The project aims to create a hardware and software system that has the ability to track food quantity and information. For the required hardware side, the ShelfTrack device features a camera and barcode scanner, using computer vision technology to identify the food being entered and its expiration date. This data is then entered into a software database housed in the system, which users can view and sort through ShelfTrack's touchscreen interface. The system will also provide notifications for items close to expiring and useful storage or use information. A ShelfTrack device can additionally be linked to a mobile app of the same name for ease of access, push notifications, and the same helpful information wherever the user is located. The primary objective of the project is to make food management simple and effective for those who need it. Possible users for this project would include households and restaurants across the world, as well as other businesses and organizations that need to track food inventory.Â
