Fast fashion is a significant contributor to global warming for a multitude of reasons. The primary reason is that the production process for fast fashion relies heavily on fossil fuels. Synthetic fibers, like polyester, which are used because of their low cost, are petroleum based. In addition, creation of these fibers releases an extremely high level of greenhouse gasses. As a result, it is estimated that the fashion industry contributes approximately 10% of global carbon emissions, more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined (United Nations Environment Program). The main reason why the fast fashion industry is so prevalent is because of their low cost; however, the quality of their materials causes a short product life cycle and a significant amount of waste. All stemming from hyper exploitation of laborers in countries where wages are not regulated and worker rights are not protected.  Because of rapidly changing styles, trends, and poor quality textiles, fast fashion encourages consumers to buy and dispose of clothing frequently. Globally, approximately 92 million tons of textile waste is produced each year, and the textiles used in fast fashion are not biodegradable. 

With AI technology, people can upload photos of any outfit inspiration, and it will use the items within the user’s closet already to create an outfit similar to the inspiration. Our app aims to conquer the clothing waste by showing people how the pieces of clothing they invest in can be repurposed in a multitude of ways. By teaching our users how to repurpose clothing pieces, we can dramatically reduce the textile waste produced each year, and thus, encourage our users to invest in pieces that have a longer life cycle.
