Local info

Restaurants:

Fitzrovia, and the adjacent King’s Cross, Bloomsbury, and Marylebone have many excellent restaurants and bars. Below are a small set of our go-to suggestions and favorites. All are vegetarian friendly.

Master Wei Xi’an $, noodles and dumplings (get the biang biang noodles)

The King of Falafel $

Comptoir Libanais $

The Good Egg $, Israeli

Caravan $

Wahaca $ Mexican

Busaba $$, Thai, good for groups

MEATliquor $$ burgers

Patty & Bun $$ burgers

BAO King’s Cross $$ Bao and Taiwanese bites

Honey & Co $$ (be sure to get the menu that comes with the selection of mezze) and Honey & Smoke $$ by the same owners

La Fromagerie $$ (the fondue is for one if you really believe in yourself, otherwise get the Raclette)

Noble Rot $$ wine bar with restaurant in the back, bar with small plates in the front. Reservations essential.

Note: Honey & Co, La Fromagerie, and Noble Rot are all across the street from each other.

Dishoom $$, Indian, a personal favorite of all three organizers!

Rovi $$$ Mediterranean. Best with a group so you can try many dishes.

Coal Office $$$ Middle eastern.

Frenchie $$$, French and conveniently located for west end shows and the opera with a good pre-theatre menu.

Ippudo $, Ramen on Villiers street is a good cheap and quick alternative for pre-theatre meals.

Wine and cocktails:

Lady of the grapes

Spiritland King’s Cross (note, also great for coffee!)

The Remedy Wine Bar Shop & Kitchen

Or wander into a pub. It’s London, you’ll find one before you cross the street!

Coffee/bakery:

Fork Deli & Patisserie $, coffee and sandwiches/bakery

Soderberg

Saint Espresso (local chain with multiple locations)

Gail’s, many locations, good spot for a quick scone with clotted cream

Fun stuff:

Some of our favorite parks are very close to UCL. Regents park and Primrose hill are worth a visit, and you can easily take the tube up to visit Hampstead Heath. Enjoy feeling like you’re away from the city as you take in the view or get lost running in the forest. Regents park, Primrose hill, and Hampstead Heath can be combined for a glorious long run. The London Zoo borders and is inside Regents Park so both zebras and giraffes can be seen from the road (east of the small running track on the north side of the park). Regents park has a beautiful rose garden that may be in bloom during the conference.

Walking along the Regents Canal from Camden to Regents Park makes for a nice afternoon. Perhaps get ice cream at Chin Chin before you set off.

You may be surprised to learn that London is full of palm trees! If you look around you will find many palm trees, including in the squares near our conference venue.

If you have time for a movie, both Curzon and Everyman are wonderful local cinemas we highly recommend. If you’re visiting from the US enjoy getting a reasonably priced ice cream sundae delivered right to your seat at the Everyman. Similarly if you see a show on the west end or off west end, enjoy some ice cream during the interval (intermission).
