Problem Statement Generation:
Statement-Restatement:
There is high risk within the elderly community as one in four elderly are prone to falls every year. There shall be a system in place in order to alert help as well as a way to track one's state of health.
Revision Method:
The focus could be changed from the elderly to a more general population that is susceptible to falls. For example, people with certain physical or neurological disorders that cause frequent falling could be integrated into the system. This would change and expand the types of motion data that would need to be sensed, and could possible require vital signs and other bio-measurements to be recorded as well.
Kepner-Tregoe (KT) situation analysis (timing, trend, impact):
Timing: According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, "One in four older adults report falling every year."
Trend: The CDC provides a graph (Fig. 1) that notes the number of deaths due to accidental falls for those 65 or older. Every year is noted as a different color. Every year seems to get slightly higher as time passes although with most recent years, the number of deaths is around the same. Yet, 2024 has about 1,000 more deaths than 2018, which shows that deaths due to unintentional falls has been slightly increasing over time.
Impact: High level of concern as "annual incidence of falls can reach 50%" (Vaishya and Vaish) among 80-89 year olds (Octogenarians) and 90-99 year olds (Nonagenarians). Additionally, the CDC states that "falls are the leading cause for injury for those 65 or older."
