Stats and Facts

• Commissioned 29 February 1944

• Gato Class submarine

• Dimensions: 311 ft long, 1,525 Tons, and 21 knots (surfaced) or 9 knots (submerged)

• Armament: 10 21-inch torpedo tubes (6 fwd, 4 aft), 1 x 3 inch deck gun, and AA armament

• Served in War in the Pacific; Sank HIJMS Shokaku in battle of Philippine Sea; Decommissioned 16 March 1946

• Interesting Fact: The Cavalla is the only Hunter-Killer Submarine  displayed on planet Earth.

• The configuration you see today is not the 1st configuration of the Cavalla. The original config had a different bridge, boasted a 20-mm Oerlikon, a 40-mm Bofors, and a 3-inch 50 caliber deck gun. In January 1954, she was converted into an SSK, or hunter killer submarine.

• Current Status: Museum Ship at the Galveston Naval Museum in Galveston, TX
