Meet Dr. Mickens!
Meet Dr. Mickens!
Hello! I'm Dr. MaryRose Mickens, and I'm excited to begin my first year at St. Stephen the Martyr as a 1st grade teacher. This year marks my 11th year in education.
My teaching journey includes four years in kindergarten, three years in pre-k, and experience as a floater teacher at an early childhood development center, where I worked with children from 6 weeks old through preschool. These experiences have strengthened my passion for helping young learners grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
I earned my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and my master's degree in Educational Administration from Creighton University. I also completed the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) Fellowship at the University of Notre Dame and earned my doctorate in Education and Leadership from Rockhurst University. My doctoral research focused on supporting English language learners in grades K–2 and exploring how classroom & instructional strategies can positively impact their academic achievement and social-emotional development.
Outside the classroom, my husband, Devonte, and I recently welcomed our first child, Isaiah, in June. We also have three dogs—Milo, Kirby, and Ozzie! As a family, we enjoy working out, taking walks, and spending quality time together.
As a teacher, my goal is to build strong relationships with every student and create a classroom where each child feels welcome, safe, valued, and capable of success. I look forward to partnering with your family to make this a joyful and meaningful year of learning!
