Static “AI detection” tools—which offer little more than unreliable percentages and have been shown to deliver false positives—are failing both educators and students. This presentation explores a superior approach to academic integrity using Rumi, a tool that shifts the focus from the final product to the writing process. By capturing granular "process data"—including keystroke dynamics, revision history playback, and time spent—Rumi creates a "digital footprint" of student work. This allows faculty to move away from "AI policing" toward evidence-based instructional support, ensuring equity and providing opportunities for positive reinforcement of authentic drafting efforts.
This panel features experienced Rumi users from across the university who participated in the 2025-2026 pilot program. They will discuss how process-based data provides a transparent alternative to traditional detectors, which often exhibit high false-positive rates and bias. Attendees will learn to interpret drafting metrics to identify suspicious patterns and use playback features to turn "integrity checks" into teaching moments. The session will demonstrate how to utilize Rumi to democratize AI access, bridging the gap toward professional readiness by distinguishing between AI as a collaborator versus a replacement for critical thinking. Finally, we provide practical strategies to navigate student "surveillance anxiety" and utilize process data as superior evidence to protect both faculty and students from false accusations.
Rumi is a tool which allows faculty to view students’ writing process and use of AI. Use of the tool is completely optional—instructors may choose whether or not to incorporate it into their teaching. Rumi helps instructors clearly communicate expectations for student use of generative AI in writing assignments. Faculty can configure a wide range of options, from prohibiting AI use entirely, to allowing specific uses (like proofreading or idea generation), to enabling open use with integrated access to paid versions of ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Faculty will be able to see the percentage of content copied, writing duration, and percentage of words revised.
Because student expectations around AI vary, and because Rumi allows faculty to view students’ writing process and AI interactions, we recommend clearly explaining both your AI guidelines and how Rumi will (or won’t) be used in your course. Transparency is key to addressing concerns students may have about fairness, surveillance, or academic integrity. This workshop will cover how to select Rumi settings to match your assignment needs and best practices for managing student use of the tool.

How do digital environments and generative AI shape student reading? This workshop explores how social annotation with Hypothesis supports active, critical, and mindful reading in the digital age. Participants will examine research on digital reading, learn how annotation can reduce distractions and deepen comprehension, and explore ways to foster authentic engagement with or without AI tools. The session includes ideas for using Hypothesis to collaboratively annotate AI output and a demo of setting up readings in your LMS. Participants will leave with practical strategies and ready-to-use assignments to enhance digital reading and interaction.
