Homework Tips for Parents

  • Establish a Routine.

  • Find a quiet place in your home where your child has access to materials they need to complete homework. They should go to this place each day.

  • TVs, ipads, phones, etc. should be removed from the space your child is working. Unless technology is part of their assignment, this will be a distraction to them.

  • Try to complete homework after school. Usually having a snack is helpful. If there are sports or activities taking place after school, have your child complete their homework shortly after. However, be sure they are rested and not rushing!

  • Set aside a reasonable amount of time for your child’s age level. They should not be getting tired, stressed or frustrated. If your child is having a lot of trouble completing the assignment, please reach out to their teacher. Homework is a reinforcement of the classroom.

  • Reading is an important part of homework. Please read with your child before bed, or at some point every night. Research shows that the more exposure your child has to vocabulary, the better reader they will be become.

  • Practice spelling and math facts nightly. There are many websites and apps that provide fun learning games.

  • Teach your child how to break down larger projects into small chunks so that they have plenty of time to complete the project.

  • Spend a few nights preparing and reviewing for tests.
