Both Ms. Brittany and Ms. Alicia completed the LETRS for Early Childhood program. This meets Minnesota state requirements for Science of Reading training under the Read Act. Instruction in phonemic awareness and other foundational reading skills is part of both our Preschool and School Readiness programming. This instruction aligns with our kindergarten reading curriculum.
The Little Cyclones Preschool Programs use the Heggerty Phonological Awareness curriculum. The Preschool (3-4 year old) curriculum teaches five phonological awareness skills: Rhyme, initial phoneme isolation, and blending are introduced at the beginning of instruction, and segmenting words and final phoneme isolation are introduced in later weeks of instruction. Two early literacy skills—alphabet knowledge and language awareness via nursery rhymes and sentences—are also taught.
The School Readiness (4-5 year old) curriculum teaches eight phonemic awareness skills: rhyme, onset fluency, phoneme isolation, blending, segmenting, adding, deleting, and substituting. Additionally, letter names, sound recognition, and language awareness via nursery rhymes are taught.
