SCIENCE
The focus of our Science curriculum is to develop unbiased thinkers who are able to critically assess their own thinking as well as the sources they encounter. Academic vocabulary will be a focus of our study. All units of study are aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS),which aim to bring student output to the forefront of the learning process.
UNITS OF STUDY – Weather • Diversity of Life • HumanSystems • Chemistry • Physics • Climate
ELA/Vocabulary
Daily Oral Language (DOL) - Each day, class will begin with DOL. Students will be expected to record the number, date, sentence provided, correct any grammar mistakes, and re-copy the corrected sentence in their notebooks. Notebooks will be checked periodically and given a grade to track student progress and to check for completion.
NEW THIS YEAR - VOCABULARY – Vocabulary can be a struggle for students, especially those who have trouble with memorization or pronunciation. Therefore, it is essential to review your vocabulary terms nightly for maximum retention and understanding.
Flash cards and review with a friend, parent, or brother/sister are very helpful. Spelling Bees, games, and other word work will also be conducted in class for review.
We will be covering one unit of vocabulary every two weeks; Tests for each unit will be on Fridays of the second week. We will start the school year with working on one set of words in each unit a week and work our way up.
