During the Spring Term, the children will build upon their Year 5 Literacy skills through Reading and Writing.
Children will have time for daily reading to enhance their reading fluency as well as opportunities to hear a class story.
In Guided Reading, we will use Comprehension Ninja Fiction and Poetry and Comprehension Ninja Non-Fiction as a focus points to initiate our discussions around a text.
During the first part of the term, we will be using the book Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly to write letters and think about the issues of black women in the space programme.
Our writing for the second part of term will be focused around a film stimulus, Pandora. Our work will culminate in writing a non-chronological report.
In each unit of writing, the children will be taught about the text type and the grammar features which are required. Each unit will have a longer write and the children are given time to edit their work, using the Year 5 Writing Checklist, before it is marked by their class teacher.
Cursive handwriting is practised throughout the week following the Nelson handwriting scheme and using a range of sources, including the week's spelling words. Children are encouraged to form their letters correctly, and practise writing at speed, whilst maintaining legibility.
