Spring 1 Art and Design Skills
In this collection of lessons children learn and develop their skills in: design, drawing, craft, making a clay tile, exploring tone through shading, developing their skills in weaving and using brush strokes.
Spring 2 - Moving Mechanisms
After learning the terms; pivot, lever and linkage, children set to designing a monster or a space buggy that will move using a linkage mechanism. After practising making linkages of different types and varying the materials they use, children can also bring their design to life with the gift of movement.
Spring 1: Programming with Scratch Jr
The children will use a programme called Scratch and will create their own animation! They will retell a familiar story using this programme.
Using an algorithm, the children will record a joke or make their own musical instrument that can play by following a set of instructions.
You can download Scratch Jr on your own devices at home, from the AppStore and Google Play store.
Spring 2: Algorithms and Debugging
The children will identify problems with code using both ‘unplugged’ and ‘plugged’ systems to diagnose and correct errors in an algorithm- a process known as ‘debugging.’
Spring 1: Australia!
The children explore the physical and man made features of Australia including the capital territories and outback.
The children also look at famous landmarks.
They will begin to make some comparisons between their local area and Australia.
Spring 2: Space
The children will be taught how to recount episodes from stories and significant events in history such as the moon landing.
During this topic, children will be expected to describe significant individuals from the past and understand why people in the past acted as they did.
The children will be introduced to songs from the Caribbean and songs about toys. They will be listening to music with a space theme, including Holst's "The Planet Suite."
They will explore how to improvise rhythms and melodies to link with the Caribbean style of music. They will learn how steel drums are made and played.
The children will explore how to maintain an ostinato rhythm against a second rhythm.
For P.E we follow the Merton scheme of work.
Spring 1: Dance
Children will explore different movements and be taught how to remember, repeat and link a range of movements with clear control. They will be encouraged to respond to music that expresses different moods, ideas and feelings. In this term we encourage them to develop an awareness of different dances through a choice of themes. We also develop their collaborative skills by giving the children opportunities to work with their partner considerately.
Spring 2: Games
Children will be encouraged to understand the importance of rules in games and be taught how to move freely and purposefully in a space. In lessons children will throw, roll, hit or kick a ball with control and accuracy so as to improve their hand eye co-ordination. The children will be taught how to throw and catch whilst moving and then progress to apply this in simple competitive games.
The children will also be taught simple tactics in competitive games such as defending and other various ball skills.
Lastly, they will begin to keep score and adapt to rule changes.
Spring 1: Materials - Squash, bend, twist and stretch!
The children will find out how the shapes of solid objects made from some materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching.
Spring 2: Plants - Ready Steady Grow!
Year 2 children will explore the world of seeds in this unit: learn why plants disperse their seeds and the various clever ways in which they do this. Plant cress seeds and grow a bean using hydroponics – watch and record what happens to them.
Using various art and design techniques, make and model your own seeds and finally enjoy the fruits of your labours!
