Introduction to the ​Male Initiative for Leadership and Education (MILE)

Presenters:

Miguel Maria (pronouns he, him, his), is the Assistant Dean of Student Initiatives. Miguel has served as the inaugural Director of the Male Initiative for Leadership and Education (MILE) since August 2021. He is responsible for administration, leadership, and management of SUCCESS funded initiatives as well as services that directly relate to student support.  MILE is a Student Support program designed to provide inclusive academic support, mentoring, and community engagement opportunities to male-identifying students at STCC. Student participants connect with professionals who serve as mentors throughout the student’s time at the college. The program consists of 1:1 and group mentoring, skill-building workshops, community service, tutoring sessions, and advising.


Christian Dejesus (pronouns he, him, his), currently serves as an Academic & Transfer Counselor for the Male Initiative for Leadership & Education. Christian earned his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Westfield State University and is working on his M.Ed in Higher Education Administration. Christian's professional experience has been centered on supporting all students in finding their voice, creating a positive, rich educational experience, and coaching students with career and professional developmental needs. Being First- Generation himself, Christian is committed to empowering students as they navigate their Higher Education experience. 


Carmelo Solivan (pronouns he, him), currently serves as an Academic & Transfer Counselor for the Male Initiative for Leadership & Education. He is a graduate of Springfield Central High School and Westfield State University. Since 2015 Carmelo's professional experience has focused on college access and career readiness in varying roles: Federally Funded Access GEAR UP Grant Advisor and Westfield State Admission Counselor. He was also the recipient of services from college access programs during his academic journey, which inspired him to help others to reach their education goals.
