This webpage is my culminating project and serves as a summary of my knowledge gained in Global Education through my participation in the 2024-25 Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms program. It will be continuously updated as more travel and learning occur. For more information on what Global Education is, visit the opening Learn page. The Teach page, and its subpages, will give you resources for your own classroom. The Travel opening page gives a tour of a variety of traveling I have done. Music Connections page will give sample lesson plans from projects the students I've worked with have found engaging, as we connect music to many subjects throughout our school building. The World Sound Map features sounds I've recorded throughout the world, which I use in my classroom for students to explore, compose with, and for use in creating beatboxes.
Lisa Werner is the PreK-8th grade Band, Choir, and Music teacher at St. Bruno Parish School in Dousman, WI. Her commitment goes beyond the conventional, constantly seeking inventive ways to intertwine music with diverse subjects, such as orchestrating students’ experiments on sound and music during a Space for Teachers zero gravity flight while playing her trombone, making connections between music and bathymetry on a NOAA Teacher at Sea mission to Oregon, or traveling on a National Geographic/Lindblad Expedition Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship to study music’s existence in Antarctica. Lisa’s passion lies in showcasing music as a tool for fostering empathy, managing emotions, and establishing connections across all cultures and eras. Her goal is to kindle aspirations in students, encouraging them to dream big and leverage the skills acquired in music class to achieve their ambitions. Lisa is beyond excited to participate in the Fulbright Program, as she knows that sharing this experience with the students she teaches will solidify their identities as future leaders, equipped to work with others around the world to address global challenges. As Bono once said, “Music can change the world, because it can change people.”
What is Global Education?
Global Competence is the skills, values, and behaviors that we want to teach our students in order to compete and thrive in their more diverse and interconnected world.
Global Education is the inclusion of Global Competence in our classroom by creating meaningful connections between the world and the content we teach. It is not a replacement for what we teach, but rather it is an additional perspective that we bring into our classroom.
When you open your doors to the world outside, the possibilities for what your students can discover are endless.
Why is Global Education Important?
Global education is important as our young students need to be prepared to work with companies in other countries. Being able to adapt to others' cultures and world views will make students more successful as workers in a global economy. We as teachers can give students the skills to succeed working with people from all over our world!
