Dear Parents/Carers,
It has been a difficult start back after half-term for our school community, after the sudden loss of our dear friend and colleague Miss Smith. We wanted to take a moment to sincerely thank you for the kindness, compassion and support you have all shown to our school community. At what has been an incredibly difficult time, your thoughtful messages and words of comfort have meant more than we can fully express. The care and empathy demonstrated by our families have been a powerful reminder of the strength and unity of our school community.
Many of you have also taken the time to check in with staff and to support your children at home with sensitivity and understanding. This partnership between home and school has been invaluable in helping us provide reassurance and stability for our pupils as we navigate this loss together. Grief affects everyone differently, and we continue to ensure that support is available for both pupils and staff. On behalf of all the staff, thank you again for standing with us and with one another. It is in moments like these that the true spirit of our community shines through.
It has been a busy start back to the term with lots of exciting events at school. Last week, our Key Stage 2 pupils took part in age-appropriate anti-racism workshops designed to support our school’s ongoing commitment to inclusion, respect and equality. During the sessions, children explored what racism is and how it can affect individuals and communities. It emphasised the importance of kindness, empathy and respect for others and what to do if they see or hear racism, including how to report concerns safely. The workshops encouraged thoughtful discussion and provided a safe space for pupils to ask questions and reflect on how their words and actions can positively impact others. We believe it is important to work in partnership with families on these topics. If your child would like to talk further about what they learned, we encourage open and supportive conversations at home. More information can be found below this message.
Our Faith Leaders organised our most recent 'Break the Rules Day' to raise funds for the local church and the purchasing of a new crucifix. It was lovely to see the children come together to try to support our local community. Together the children raised a total of £660.15.
We were delighted to celebrate World Book Day this week at school with a range of exciting activities designed to promote a love of reading across all year groups. The day began with children and staff coming to school dressed as their favourite book characters. It was wonderful to see such creativity and enthusiasm, with costumes inspired by a wide range of authors and stories. Throughout the day, pupils took part in a variety of book-themed activities, including an assembly all about the love of reading with Mrs Bennett and Miss Broom, DEAR - Drop Everything And Read, Class shared reading , 3D junk model competition, KS2 BBC Live Lesson, Pobble Live writing lesson and a Mystery Reader.
Teachers also used the opportunity to highlight the importance of reading for pleasure and to explore new authors and genres with the children. Each child received a World Book Day token, which can be exchanged for a special World Book Day book or used towards the cost of a book at participating booksellers. Thank you to parents and carers for supporting the day with costumes and helping us celebrate the joy of reading. We hope the excitement continues at home as children share the stories they are enjoying.
Volunteer Parents Needed – Easter Holiday Painting Project 🎨
We’re looking for a small team of volunteer parents to help our caretaker repaint the dining room during the first week of the Easter holidays. If you’re able to spare a few hours (or more!), your support would make a huge difference and help freshen up the space for the children’s return. No professional decorating experience is needed — just enthusiasm and a willingness to help! If you’re available and would like to volunteer, please contact the school office at parents@stbernadette.herts.sch.uk so we can coordinate days and times.
Kind regards,
Mrs Lavelle-Murphy & Mrs Reilly

It can be tricky deciding whether or not to keep your child off school when they're unwell.
If you do keep your child at home, it's important to phone school before 9am on the first day. Let us know that your child won't be in and provide the reason.
If your child is well enough to come to school but has an infection that could be passed on, such as a cold sore or head lice, let their teacher know.

In February, the government published 'The White Paper'. This white paper and accompanying documents set out the government’s vision for schools and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) reform to support every child to achieve and thrive. These are key proposed changes, and a consultation period for these has now begun. A copy of the white paper and accompanying documents can be found here
The consultation is open to anyone who wishes to respond. We encourage parents and carers of children and young people with SEND to share their views and experiences with the Department for Education.
Details of how to respond to the consultation can be found here: SEND reform: putting children and young people first - GOV.UK

Four of our Year 5 children took part in the HFL maths competition 2026 this week. They competed against other Year 5 teams across the country in one of the heats, with the aim of making it to the final.
The challenge was split into 4 rounds. Rounds 1,2 and 4 were all scored out of 40 and round 3 was scored out of 45. In Round 1 which was general mathematics, they scored 31. In Round 2 which was estimation, they scored 16, In Round 3 which was perplexing puzzles, they scored 42 and in Round 4 which was complex conundrums, they scored the maximum points available of 40. This gave them a total score of 129 out of 165. Although this was not enough to make the final, the school scored above the national average of 123 which was an excellent achievement.
Well done to Daisy, Jake, Oliver and Szymon for working so well as team and displaying a vast range of knowledge to do so well. You should all be incredibly proud of yourselves.
It was a nail biting first Premier League match for the St Bernadette Lions this week against the mighty Garden Fields. Our opponents have been the number two seeded team in the St Albans district for the last few years, making them fearsome competitors. So much so that St Bernadette has never secured a win or a draw against them in all our years.
It was an exciting battle; with Evie scoring the first goal of the match. Our defence worked tirelessly, preventing Garden Fields from scoring multiple times. With one more goal from Evie and another from Tiago, spirits remained high. Garden Fields fought back, scoring three goals of their own, and the game looked like it could go either way.
The final whistle brought relief to players and spectators alike. The game ended in a 3-3 draw - a huge achievement, and making a small piece of St Bernadette netball history too. Well done to Evie, Daisy, Tiago, Elijah, Holly, Florence, Margarida, Lucia and also to Freddie who was awarded MPV.
Go Lions!
The school football team went head-to-head with How Wood Primary School in a competitive match last week.
St Bernadette's took the lead early on through a brilliant solo goal by Jack. He chased the ball and even when it looked like he was going to be outmuscled off the ball, he persevered, ran through on goal and slotted the ball past the keeper at the near post. It was a very physical game with both sides going shoulder to shoulder with each other. Although the defence remained compact and organised, and Harleigh produced some good saves to prevent the equaliser, on the stroke of half time How Wood equalised to make the score 1-1.
After half time, Jake came on to the pitch and between him and Jack they injected some pace at the beginning of the second half, as it looked like St Bernadette's were getting on top. Sadly, How Wood grew back into the game and ultimately took the game 2-1 and claiming all 3 points. A good team performance, but sadly not meant to be in terms of 3 points. The team has 2 more upcoming football games against St Albans St Stephens, to work their way up the league table.
Last week, a group of Year 3 and 4 pupils represented our school at the Rapid Fire Cricket festival held at Beaumont School. The children showed fantastic enthusiasm, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the afternoon.
Rapid Fire Cricket is a fast-paced and exciting format of the game, and our pupils demonstrated great batting skills, accurate bowling and some excellent fielding in every match. Most importantly, the team supported one another brilliantly and displayed a positive attitude at all times.
Although the school didn't win the competition, they played excellently and worked well together as a team. Well done to all the children involved for representing the school brilliantly. They listened carefully to coaching advice, encouraged their teammates and represented the school with pride.
