Dear Parents/Carers,
As we enter the final weeks of the Autumn term, there is a wonderful sense of excitement and anticipation across the school. The school has been filled with the beautiful sounds of children singing and it truly is a special time of year. Advent offers us a precious opportunity for reflection, hope and acts of kindness and it has been wonderful to see the children living out our Gospel values in so many ways.
Thank you to all of those who attended the Christmas Fair and contributed to the fundraising event. The FABs team did a great job ensuring that all those who attended had a fabulous time, whilst raising crucial funds for the school. Thank you for all your hard work!
On Wednesday, we had the pleasure of the Key Stage 1 Christmas performance and it was a true delight. The children spoke out and sang with passion and it was lovely to see them having such a good time, bringing the Christmas story to life. It was lovely to see so many parents/ carers and family members at the performances. It was also lovely to have Father Kevin in attendance who said it was just like he had been transported to Bethlehem itself . We cannot wait to see the EYFS and KS2 children perform next week. Year 3 also had the opportunity this week to visit Westminster Cathedral for their annual Carol Service. It was fantastic to worship together with other schools across the Diocese and to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas.
Although there is plenty of festive fun, learning remains our focus. Please continue to encourage:
Regular reading at home
High expectations for behaviour
Good attendance and punctuality
These routines make a big difference, especially during this busy time of year.
We are deeply grateful for your ongoing support, your partnership with the school, and your commitment to our shared Catholic mission. Thank you for your presence at school events, your encouragement of your children, and your contributions to our community.

At this time of year there are lots of bugs and illnesses going around. If your child is unwell, please remember to report your child’s absence to the school office as soon as possible. You can notify us by phone call, email, or by leaving a message on the answerphone before morning 9 am.
A reminder that for any sickness or diarrhoea, children must remain at home for 48 hours after the last episode before returning to school. This helps us keep everyone healthy and minimise the spread of illness.
27th January 2025 9am - Elaine Bridle, the local DSPL7 lead, will be running a talk for parents on 'Understanding and Supporting Children with Anxiety'. We hope that this will be very beneficial for our school community.
Please contact the school office by emailing parents@stbernadette.herts.sch.uk if you are interested in attending.

St Bernadette vs Abbey School:
There have been two excellent displays from the school football team, both against Abbey School.
Match 1:
In our first match against them, the team went 1-0 down very early on but stuck together as a group to level the score at 1-1 very shortly after. Abbey regained the lead once more, which proved to be another test of character for the school team, and this one was met with ease as once again we levelled the score at 2-2. Most teams would be happy to be level at this point, having fallen behind twice, but not our team. Having put Abbey School under a lot of pressure, we took the lead just before half-time to lead 3-2. Sadly, the result wasn't meant to be, and despite the best efforts of the team, we ended up losing 3-6. The team came together brilliantly to keep their heads held high and not give up.

Match 2:
Just a week later, the two schools met again. At this point, the school team knew that Abbey had won all their games this season, and it was going to be a big test of character. In a very competitive first half, both defences were on top, keeping chances of scoring to a minimum. St Bernadette's got into some excellent positions to score, but just couldn't get that crucial shot on goal away to test the keeper. After half time, the game switched. Frankie was introduced and injected a lot of pace into the game, getting behind the Abbey defence on multiple occasions, and he got a lovely cross into the box for Leighton to tuck away, past the keeper for 1-0. The defence kept their shape brilliantly to defend the lead, and we looked like a constant threat going forward. As we approached the halfway point of the second half, Abbey equalised to level the score at 1-1. The team rallied together and knew that the game was there to be won. Although we got into more excellent positions, we couldn't find the crucial goal to make it 2-1, and sadly, we were punished as Abbey won the game late on to claim a 2-1 victory. Another performance for the team to be proud of, despite the result.

St Bernadette vs Killigrew School
The St Bernadette Lions took on Killigrew school for their final match of the term. Despite the cold, St Bernadette were off to a flying start with three goals in the first quarter and one to each team in the second. Killigrew found their stride around the halfway point and scored two goals on the bounce, leaving the Lions with only a one goal difference but we shifted back into first gear scoring three more, resulting in a 7-4 win overall. This leaves the Lions undefeated, qualifying them for Premier League next term. Tiago was awarded MVP by the Killigrew team. Evie has pulled into first place as our highest scorer with 22 goals across 5 games, with Sienna on the Tigers team second place with 15, and Elijah from the Lions, third, on 14.
A huge well done to Evie, Tiago, Daisy (Year 5), Florence, Holly, Margarida, Lucia and Freddie. Hear those Lions roar!
The Gardening Club is so excited to share that our vegetable beds are finally showing delicious progress!
After weeks of planting and careful tending, we now have healthy broccoli and Brussels sprouts growing strong. Mrs Plant and the pupils have been working hard to water, weed and watch over the garden and it’s rewarding to see their efforts paying off.
We can’t wait to harvest our veggies and continue learning together in the garden!
Next Gen Spurs are excited to offer you and your community the chance to win some fantastic prizes, including a Stadium Tour, a Stadium Skywalk experience (minimum age 8 years), and signed items. Please see the digital flyers and a link for the draw below:
