St Bernadette Catholic Primary School

Message from the

Co-headteachers

Dear Parents and Carers,

Finally, the longest month of the year is behind us and we begin to look forward to longer days and sunshine.

Maths deep dive

This week our School improvement partner, Mrs Short, came to visit the school to undertake a 'Deep dive' into our maths provision.  Mrs Short visited all classrooms alongside our skilled maths lead, Ms Merrell, to observe maths lessons and met with a variety of pupils from every class to discuss maths and look a their books.  In all lessons, there was a clear enthusiasm from both staff and children around maths, excellent modelling of new concepts, consistent use of mini whiteboards to ensure teachers could assess children throughout the lesson and effective working walls.  When the children met with Mrs Short, they spoke overwhelmingly positive about their maths lessons.  Overall, it was a hugely positive day and an excellent opportunity to allow the pupils and staff to show our visitor how strong the quality of maths is within St Bernadette school.

Parent coffee afternoon

We held our first parent coffee afternoon of 2024 on Monday 29th January. We were very grateful to the parents that attended, giving us a good opportunity to have some beneficial discussions.  Please go to the school website to see the minutes from this meeting.

Cultural day

We look forward to hosting our annual cultural day next week on Tuesday 6th February.  All parents are invited to visit their children's classroom at 2.45pm to see what the children have created as part of their activities.  Please come through the front entrance and make your way to the classrooms.

Finally, we wish you a wonderful and peaceful weekend.

Kind regards

Mrs Lavelle-Murphy & Mrs Reilly

Racial Justice Sunday

God of light and truth, you call all men and women to live lives of holiness and justice.

Help us to see in one another: a heart which is tender, a mind which is humble and a care for our brothers and sisters; so that together we may build up the Body of Christ as a sign of hope and mercy for all.

We make this prayer through Jesus our Lord

FABS - New books for St Bernadette!

Using the funds raised at the Christmas Fair, we have purchased some much-needed class sets of books for guided reading! The children are enjoying having real books to learn from and read over longer periods of time. Here is some of the feedback from the children themselves:

"We have got a new set of books in our class called Wild Robot and every time I walk past them, I feel excited to start reading it."

“Before Christmas, we read a book about Mr Gum and now everyone is trying to get the other books about Mr Gum.”

"Before we got the class set of books, we would use photocopies of a page.  Now we have the actual book, it really helps us."

"We are reading Street Child at the moment and it's really good.  We like having our own copy because we can look back in the book at things that have happened."

"We all have a copy of The Boy in the Tower.  It's great because we can be more independent and we enjoy reading more."

"We loved reading Letters from the Lighthouse last term.  It kept us in suspense right until the end!"

"We enjoy having our own copy of the book because we can dip into it regularly which helps us to explore the whole text.  We can re-read or read ahead too if we want to!"

Thank you again for all your kind donations and support. As you can read, it is making a real difference to the children!

Our new and improved Library!

Our new and improved Library has lots of areas for you to explore: poems, non-fiction books, chapter books, books to teach us about British Values, books by your favourite authors, staff favourite books, and a whole section for our 100 Book Challenge. Our new display for our 100 Book Challenge Wall of Fame is up and ready to be filled with children that complete each stage of the challenge! Could you be the next face up on the wall?!

You may notice a new section too, called “St Bernadette Originals”. This is an opportunity for the children to become authors, and write their very own book to add to our library! They could type it, handwrite it, write it at home, or write it at school. In the Library, you will see the “7 Story Types” displayed above this section- they can use these to give them inspiration into what type of book they would like to write! We cannot wait to see what budding authors we have among us!
