Spring 2
This term the title of our RE topic has been Desert to Garden.
‘Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day’ (1 Cor 15:3).
In this branch, pupils will study the season of Lent and its culmination in the events of Holy Week. They will learn about the Paschal Triduum at the heart of the Catholic Church’s Liturgy and life. The title of this branch points both to the liturgical journey from the desert of Lent to the garden of Resurrection, but also to the Paschal journey from darkness to light, barrenness to fruitfulness, death to life.
Praying for the souls of our loved ones is a beautiful and important way to show our love and support for them, even after they have passed away. The Church believes that death is not the end, but rather a transition to eternal life.
Over Easter we keep in our thoughts and prayers those who have passed away. We especially keep our beloved friend and colleague, Miss Smith in our prayers.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.
Catholic Social Teaching
‘Love one another: just as I have loved you ... By this all people will know that you are my disciples.’
John 13:34-35
As humans, we are made to live in community with one another. This means being active members of the world we live in. We are meant to look out for each other and build each other up. This is how God wants us to live.
To support our local parish community, the children took part in a 'Break the rules day'. The Faith Leaders organised a fun filled day in which the children broke some of the school rules! Children came to school in their own clothes, brought toys into school, had crazy hair and juice in their water bottles. As a school community we raised £600. This is money is being given to our Church and will go towards a new crucifix. We thank everyone for their support.
A prayer for Community and Participation:
Loving God,
We come together to thank you for our communities.
You created us to live with each other and show Your love to those in need.
Let us give thanks for the joy that our communities bring us and ask You to help us make our communities better.
We pray for those who do not feel a part of their communities.
O God, help us to show love to those who feel unloved.
We pray for those who do not know how to ask for help.
O God, help us to reach out our hands to those in need.
We pray that everyone feels comfortable, supported and loved in our communities.
O God, help us to spread Your love.
We pray that we may be able to make our communities better places for all who live in them.
O God, help us to use the gifts You gave us for the benefit of others.
Nursery: The children listened to the Easter story. The children heard that Jesus shared a last meal with his friends and then was put on a cross to die. After three days he rose again. Nursery then created an Easter Garden.
Reception: Reception started this half term with our Catholic Social Teaching lesson. The children had to draw a picture of the things they like to do with their family and friends. We then learned about the season of Lent and made Lenten Promises to help us grow closer to Jesus. We acted out what happened on Palm Sunday and then the children explained what happened to Jesus on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
Year 1 began their learning by thinking about the Catholic Social Teaching topic of Community and Participation, and they reflected on what communities they belong to, and how they can help people within these communities. They learnt about Jesus being tempted in the desert and how this links to what Catholics do during Lent. The children wrote their own Lenten promises to create our class Lenten promise tree, reflecting on the 3 pillars of Lent- prayer, fasting and Almsgiving. They also learnt the story of the Widow’s Mite and thought about how they could also be generous just like the poor widow. They learnt all about Holy Week and created some artwork to represent Good Friday. The children also took part in a workshop focusing all on Judaism.
This half term Year 2 have thought about forgiveness and how Jesus forgave everyone even when he was on the cross. We recognised that Lent is a time for reconciliation and when we make bad choices, we turn away from God.
We discussed the events of Holy Week starting with Palm Sunday when Jesus entered Jerusalem and thought about how Jesus was preparing to return to His Father.
In Lent we also prepare to get closer to God
the Father. It is time of reconciliation and forgiveness for Christians because they want to restore their relationship with God and be ready to celebrate the resurrection.
We have looked at some religious art centred on Holy week and wrote a diary entry from the perspective of Judas or Peter.
This half term, Year Three’s topic has been ‘Desert to Garden.’ We have explored how Jesus’ feeding of the multitude prepares for the gift of the Eucharist and reflects God’s care for his people in the desert. Year Three focused on the Liturgy of the Eucharist as the second main part of the Mass, revisiting the Mass as a whole and understanding it as a celebration of Jesus’ death and Resurrection and a great act of thanksgiving. We learnt what happens during the Eucharistic liturgy, including key prayers and responses, and how Catholics participate through word, gesture, and song. The class have deepened their understanding of the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and reflected on how receiving Holy Communion transforms believers, calling them to live as part of the Body of Christ in the world.
We also learnt about Judaism. We got to play games, write using the Hebrew alphabet and see how the Torah is read from right to left.
This half term, in year four we have covered the topic ‘Desert to Garden.’ We have been learning about parables such as the parable of the prodigal son as well as the parable of the judgement of nations which we enjoyed learning about. We learnt why being forgiving is important and why it is important to help those who are in need in our society as we will be helping Jesus as well. We also learnt about Judaism. We got to play games, write using the Hebrew alphabet and see how the Torah is read from right to left. We learnt about what happens in Holy week and why the Easter holiday is celebrated. We sympathised with the pain Jesus went through but we understood that He died so that our sins can be forgiven.
This half term, Year 5 have been looking at the Ash Wednesday mass and have explained what happens using religious vocabulary to demonstrate their understanding. They then wrote out scripts for a conversation between two people who were discussing what happens at the Ash Wednesday mass and acted this out. To further develop this understanding, they read scripture about Ash Wednesday and created a map about the journey of Lent beginning with Ash Wednesday and ending with Easter Sunday. Their next focus was on sin and how these relate to the Ten Commandments. To finish off their learning for this half term, they created leaflets to guide people on how to resist temptation when asked to sin and they discussed what a conscience is and how it can guide us to make decisions in different situations.
This half term, Year 6 have continued to study John’s Gospel, looking closely at the events of Holy Week, leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion. They read and responded to scripture, showing an understanding of how John revealed deeper meanings about Jesus as the Messiah. They also debated whether Jesus received a fair trial and looked at how the cross is shown as Jesus’ throne and the greatest sign of his love. Finally, Year 6 presented a very thoughtful and reverent performance of the Stations of the Cross to the school community.
Stations of the Cross:
Prayers for Ash Wednesday
Loving God,
as we begin this season of Lent,
remembering we are dust,
yet abundantly loved by you
fill us with gratitude for all you have made.
Open in us your ways of generosity,
and may the gifts we offer
help us to share your love with all,
in our homes, our communities and our world.
Teach us to pray,
drawing us ever closer to you,
so that we may walk with Jesus
as he journeys to the Cross.
May our fast be pleasing to you,
freeing us to be present to the Spirit
and aware of the needs of others,
awakening in us a hunger for justice
Amen.
Time to make the desert journey
and renew our way to life.
Time for testing and for changing.
Time to trust the word of God.
Time to recognise holy presence
and share Cyrene's work.
Time for forgiveness and for healing
and to repent our broken lives.
Time to build God's dwelling with us
and proclaim full life for all.
Time to watch and wait with Jesus
and to prepare the upper room.
Time to turn our lives again to God
and to transform our world with love.
Amen.
Prayer for Good Friday
Jesus, you are my Lord and my God,
you endured such pain and suffering for me,
you died for love of me.
I kneel beneath your cross
and beg for mercy.
Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.
O blood and water flowing from your side,
sanctify and cleanse me.
Lord, I love you with all my heart
and place all my trust in you.
Amen.

A prayer for Easter Sunday.
How wonderful, Lord Jesus, you came back
You suffered death but conquered it
You laid in the tomb but on the third day
You rose again
O joyful day, Lord Jesus, when you returned
You are the resurrection, our hope and our life
O glorious and victorious Redeemer
Help us not to be afraid of death
For we must pass through it to see you face to face
And on the last day we will rise again
For you said so
Let us rejoice and praise you
Our Blessed and triumphant Lord
On this happy, joyful feast.
Amen.
