Spring 1
This term the title of our RE topic has been Galilee to Jerusalem.
Galilee to Jerusalem: ‘God’s only Son, who is at the Father’s side, has made him known’ (Jn 1:18).
In this branch, will learn about the life of Jesus and his revelation of the Kingdom of God through parables, encounters, miracles, and teachings. They will learn about the call of the disciples and the nature of being a follower of Jesus.
Catholic Social Teaching
‘Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but associate with those in need.’
Romans 12:16
The Catholic Social Teaching (CST) we have been focusing on this half term is Solidarity and Peace. As a school we have thought about what the words 'Solidarity and Peace' mean. We had a special assembly and decided that Solidarity means to stand up for each other. If we stand up for and speak out on behalf of those in need in our world, we can make the world a fairer and more peaceful place.
There are many way to define peace.
Freedom from disturbance – freedom to live your life as you wish.
Free from anxiety or distress – being happy and calm.
Make peace – forgiving others when they have done things wrong.
At peace with the world – to live in a state of harmony with others all around us.
We have thought about how we can all be Peacemakers. Peacemakers are people who dedicate their lives and work to making the world more peaceful.
They help reconcile people with God and with one another. During our lessons we have thought about how we can be peacemakers in our school community.
Our Faith Leaders have been busy planning some fun activities to raise money for a new crucifix in our church.
Nursery: In RE the children heard that Jesus wants us to care for others. The children listened to the story of Maddie’s fridge where a girl helped her friend who could not afford food. We discussed how we can look after those in need. We talked about how we can help people who don’t have enough food to eat and watched how food banks help many people. Afterwards the children did a food bank colouring activity and played shopping bingo.
Reception: In Reception this half term we have been learning about when the Wise Men visited Jesus. We talked about the different gifts they gave to Jesus and made crowns and did a procession as if the children were kings. We learned that Jesus said when we do something kind for someone else, it is the same as if we have done it for him. This means that if we want to give Jesus a gift, we can do this by being kind to other people. We wrote about times when we had been kind to someone in school. We then learned that Jesus came for everyone and read the scripture Mark 10:13-16 Jesus welcomes the children. The children looked at special things that help us to talk to our friend Jesus. They looked at pictures of Jesus, statues of Jesus, prayer books, rosary beads, and our prayer table in the classroom. Then the children thought about what they wish they could tell Jesus right now. They passed around the baby Jesus from the crib and whispered to him what they wanted to tell him today. We also learned that Jesus takes care of everyone. We read the scripture John 6:1-4 Jesus feeds the hungry crowd and then acted out the story.
Year 1 began their learning this half term by thinking about the Catholic Social Teaching topic of Peace and Solidarity and reflected on ways that they can act peacefully. They then learnt about the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple to Simeon and Anna and also the story of Zacchaeus and reflected on how Simeon, Anna and Zacchaeus were all impacted by meeting Jesus. They learnt about how Jesus is the Light of the World and thought about how they could be lights in other people's lives. They made links between Jesus' mission and their own calling as Christians, and finished their learning by looking at how Candlemas is celebrated around the world.
This term we have learnt about parables and how even though they were written a long time ago, we can still learn from them.
We acted out the 'Calming of the Storm', wrote a diary entry about Jesus healing the paralysed man and thought about the parabel of the Lost Sheep. We discussed how even though we may sometimes walk away from God's path, He will always guide us back.
We became art detectives and looked at some religious art, spotting the signs and symbols of baptism in each painting.
This half term, we have encountered key passages from the Gospel of St Matthew and explored how Jesus’ parables and miracles reveal the meaning of the Kingdom of God. We learnt Matthew groups stories together to highlight a shared message, including through parables. We explored how these parables use everyday images, such as seeds and farming, to prompt listeners to think differently about God’s kingdom, and that miracles were a sign of Jesus’ compassion and divine power. We reflected on how these miracles invite believers to open their hearts to faith and recognise God at work in the world. Through Matthew’s account of the Magi and other epiphany moments, we now understand how Jesus is revealed as Lord and Saviour for all nations and will see how the Gospel invites Christians to build the Kingdom of God in their own lives.
This half term we have been learning about how Jesus was identified as the Messiah by Peter and what Christians today believe about Jesus. We looked at the different ways that Jesus showed that he was the Messiah and we linked this to scriptures in the book of Matthew. We also had hot seat interview sessions where we pretended to be the different people that Jesus healed and we were asked by our group mates about our experiences and our lives before and after Jesus healed us. This was a fun activity for us to reflect on the works of Jesus and how he showed through healing that he was a humble and servant Messiah.
In Year 5 this half term, we have been exploring the Beatitudes. We have looked at scripture to support our understanding of this and compared these with our prior learning of the Ten Commandments. Another focus of ours has been the New Law and we have been making personal reflections on how these influence our lives today. The final focus of ours this half term, has been the Transfiguration. We have explored how the disciples would have felt at the time of this taking place and why this was a mystery. We acted this out to emphasise the main parts of the story.
In Year 6 this half term, we have been exploring the seven miracles of Jesus in John’s Gospel. We have been reading and responding to scripture and making links to other scripture and Bible stories. We also looked at the ‘I am’ statements in John’s Gospel and discussed what the metaphors reveal about Jesus. We then wrote our own modern day ‘I am’ poems to reflect on what Jesus means to us. Finally, we looked at the seven sacraments of the Catholic faith and explained the purpose of each sacrament in the life of the Catholic Church and the links to Jesus’ life.
Prayers for Ash Wednesday
Loving God,
as we begin this season of Lent,
remembering we are dust,
yet abundantly loved by you
fill us with gratitude for all you have made.
Open in us your ways of generosity,
and may the gifts we offer
help us to share your love with all,
in our homes, our communities and our world.
Teach us to pray,
drawing us ever closer to you,
so that we may walk with Jesus
as he journeys to the Cross.
May our fast be pleasing to you,
freeing us to be present to the Spirit
and aware of the needs of others,
awakening in us a hunger for justice
Amen.
Time to make the desert journey
and renew our way to life.
Time for testing and for changing.
Time to trust the word of God.
Time to recognise holy presence
and share Cyrene's work.
Time for forgiveness and for healing
and to repent our broken lives.
Time to build God's dwelling with us
and proclaim full life for all.
Time to watch and wait with Jesus
and to prepare the upper room.
Time to turn our lives again to God
and to transform our world with love.
Amen.
