Merry Christmas
This term the title of our RE topic has been Prophecy and Promise.
‘In many and various ways, God spoke to our ancestors by the prophets’ (Heb 1:1)
In this branch, pupils have explored the Christian understanding of the teaching of the prophets as they point to the fulfilment of God’s promise in a Messiah, Jesus Christ. They looked at expectant waiting for the Messiah through the Advent season and how this speaks to Christians today as they wait for Christ. The children encountered the story of the nativity of Jesus and the mystery of the incarnation.
The children and staff would like to wish everyone a happy and holy christmas. We hope you all have time to celebrate with your loved ones. We also remember those who are no longer with us and take comfort that they are still watching over us and walking alongside us through this season.
Here is to a happy and healthy 2026.
The spirit of the Lord is on me, for he has anointed me to bring the good news to the afflicted. He has sent me… to let the oppressed go free.
LUKE 4:18
The Catholic Social Teaching (CST) we have been focusing on this half term is Option for the Poor. The Church holds that we should all have a special focus on supporting, walking alongside, and sharing with people who are living in poverty. Pope Francis’s much quoted phrase about wanting ‘a poor church for the poor’ holds the Catholic social teaching principle of the preferential option for the poor at its heart. It is not just thinking that we know what people want or need, but listening to people, sharing in their suffering, being the ‘voice for the voiceless’ when it is not being heard, whilst enabling the voice, the experience, the needs of people to be heard by others in our communities, society, and the world.
The option for the poor reminds us of God’s preferential love for the poorest and most vulnerable people. God’s love is universal; he does not side with oppressors, but loves the humble.
During this topic the children have thought about how they can help people in their wider community, the importance of food banks and soup kitchens and how we as a school can help those less fortunate than ourselves.
Take a look at some of the community projects our children have undertaken for their Ctaholic Socual Teaching topic:
EYFS and Year 2: Year 2 made Christmas cards for people in the local community and our friends in EYFS took the cards to the church to hand out whilst singing some wonderful carols.
Year 1 and Year 5: For their Catholic Social Teaching Project, Year 5 made Christmas decorations with Year 1. They have sold as many as they can and all the money that they receive will be donated to the Ollie Foundation.
Year 3: For Year 3’s Catholic Social teaching project, we have written and sent Christmas cards to the Doctors, Nurses and staff of Great Ormond Street.
Year 4: Year 4 created positive affirmations for the staff at St Bernadette. They hand delivered them and all the staff now have one on their desk to make them smile.
Thank you Year 4.
Year 6: Year 6 chose to make Secret Santa gift packages for the residents of Verulam House, a care home in St Albans.
The personalised gifts included:
Christmas card
Decorated bauble
Wooden tree decoration
Bracelet
Christmas jokes
The children wrote to Mr Coppin, the manager of Verulam House, to ask for the names of the residents so that they could personalise the cards and gifts.
Nursery: Nursery have been learning about the story of the birth of Jesus. We learnt that Mary was told she going to have a baby called Jesus. He was born in Bethlehem and an angel told the Shepherds to go and visit Mary and Joseph and baby Jesus in a stable.
Reception: Reception have been learning about how Mary was chosen by God to have a special baby named Jesus. The children learned how Mary and Joseph travelled to Bethlehem on a donkey and Jesus was born in a stable. They learned that the shepherds visited baby Jesus and that Jesus was born for everyone. The children acted out the different parts of the story in class and then performed their Christmas play retelling the whole story.
This half term, Year 1 have learnt all about the story of Jesus’ birth, from the beginning with the Annunciation, through to the visit from the Shepherds. They have learnt the words to the Hail Mary and have also learnt it in Sign Language, and have started to make links between the words of this prayer and the words that the Angel Gabriel said to Mary when he told her the Good News that she would have the Son of God, named Jesus. The children have made their own paper plate angels as a reminder that angels are sent from God to deliver important messages. They have also used the time of advent to reflect on how they can help those that are less fortunate and have made their own Advent Promise calendar, with many ways that they can promise to help those around us during this season. They have also learnt about Hinduism and the festival of Diwali, making diya lamps to show one of the ways that this festival is celebrated.
This term in Year 2 we have thought about how Mary felt knowing she was having the Son of God. We have also discussed what is really important during the season of advent and we made our advent promises. Lots of the children have thought about other people and how they can help those less fortunate than themselves.
We also read all about the birth of John the Baptist from Luke's Gospel and took part in a 'hot seating' task.
We took part in the KS1 nativity 'The Curious Sheep'. We showed everyone the true meaning of Christmas and why this is such a special time for Christians around the world.
This half term, Year 3 has been exploring both the structure of Mass and the Nativity in St.Matthew’s Gospel. We have focused on the Liturgy of the Word, understanding how Christians listen to scripture and respond in faith. Through studying St Matthew’s account of the Nativity, Year 3 has been able to see Jesus as a fulfillment of prophecy. To finish our unit we explored Angels as messengers within the Gospel through the Annunciation to Joseph. This branch has helped Year 3 to deepen their understanding of how scripture is lived and celebrated.
Year 3 also had the opportunity to represent St. Bernadette's at the Westminster Cathedral Advent service. Once more, the children heard the story of Christmas and the importance of why we celebrate each year.
This half term in year 4 we learnt about prophets. We discovered what a prophet is and what a prophet does. We learnt about Elijah and how he delivered God’s message to King Ahab to stop worshiping idols. We marvelled at how God took care of Elijah in the wilderness by sending ravens with food to him. We then did a craft activity of cutting, matching, joining and colouring ravens. Learning about the work of prophets made us understand the love that God has for us all and how he sends us special chosen people to remind us to never give up in Him and to keep having hope and faith.
In RE this half term, Year 5 has been focusing on David and his anointing. As part of their learning, they have retold the story of David and looked at the story of David and Goliath. They have also studied how God prepared David for service as king. Within this, they demonstrated their understanding of different scripture. To finish our learning in this unit, they created a piece of art that represented Psalm 23 and also researched the seven different ‘O Antiphons’.
This half term, Year 6 have been learning how the Old Testament shows the importance of women in salvation history, exploring key female protagonists such as Miriam, Hannah, Esther and Sarah. They also looked at the significance of the Magnificat prayer and Mary’s key role.
When studying another faith, Year 6 learnt about the various Gods and Goddesses followed by Hindus.
Prayers for Advent
Christ, come into our world of darkness
Light up our lives with your coming.
Fulfil all our longings with the joy of your birth
Strengthen our resolve to work for change in our world
And to share the hope of your birth that each Advent brings.
Amen.

Maranatha!
Open our eyes to the dignity of all people
And our ears to the cries of the earth.
Maranatha!
Let us walk in solidarity with the poor
And cleanse our world from oppression.
Maranatha!
Let us shout out for justice for all
And renew our hope for change.
Maranatha!
The Lord is coming
Let us share the Good News!
Amen.
