This term the title of our RE topic has been Creation and Covenant.
'The heavens are telling the glory of God.' Psalm 19.
In this branch, pupils will encounter the God who creates and calls a people. They will explore revelation of the Christian belief that all that is comes from God, the Creation accounts in Genesis, and scientific explanations of the process of Creation. They will explore the call of God and his covenantal relationship with his people first through Abraham and Moses, then through the narrative of the Old Testament.
Our Lady of Walsingham
This half term we have celebrated the feast day of Our Lady of Walsingham. This is a special day for our school as we belong to the parish of Our Lady of Walsingham. To celebrate the feast and to commemorate the rededication of the church after the extensive refurbishment, a painting was commissioned by the parish. The painting was intended for the Richeldis hall but Father Kevin and the artist, Lilia (a past pupil and daughter of Ms Campanella) have both decided that it should hang in the Lady Chapel in the church and a copy will be made to hang in the hall in the near future.
The painting itself depicts the vision when Our Lady appeared to Lady Richeldis de Faverches, a wealthy widow, in 1061, and asked her to build a replica of the Holy House at Nazareth in Walsingham. The Holy House is Mary's family home where she was visited by the Angel Gabriel and told that she will have a baby and she will name him Jesus. Lady Richeldis did as she was asked and today millions of pilgrims visit the shrine in Walsingham. The picture was inspired by the stained glass window in the Walsingham Shrine.
The painting was blessed by Bishop Paul McAleenan on Sunday 27th September.
When Lilia was a Year 6 pupil she painted a picture of St Bernadette with Our Lady. This painting is displayed in the entrance of our school and is often used in Mass and other school celebrations. We are very proud to have an original piece of art from Lilia in our school.
The earth and all it contains has been created by God. It is a gift, given to all for the good of all. The resources of the earth are not infinite. They have been given to us and to future generations. How we have treated and continue to treat the earth has profound impacts on people now and in the future. Too often we have destroyed elements of the earth for a quick gain. Pope Francis described our destruction of creation as ‘like saying to God, 'I don't like it' ... Care for creation is care for God's gift to us. Pope Leo XIV has strongly continued the Catholic Church's mission to care for the environment, heavily inspired by Pope Francis's letter Laudato Si’. To show an understanding that the Earth is a beautiful gift from God that we must protect together. As stewards, or custodians, of creation we have a special role to play. How we care for the earth is another sign of how we are Christians, how we show God’s love in the world and put our love into action.
The Catholic Social Teaching (CST) we have been focusing on this half term is Care of Creation.
During this topic we aim to introduce the concept of caring for creation – what it means to be a ‘good steward’ and how our school community could look after our world. It is important that children understand the way we treat our common home affects everyone, in every country, now and in the future.
We also had the Harvest Festival and the Harvest Mass.
Thank you for all your generous donations.
Faith Leaders: Our Faith Leaders have been put into 3 groups; Gospel, Catholic Social Teaching and Faith. They will be working alongside Mrs Wright and Miss Heymoz to help complete some exciting tasks throughout the school year.
Rosary Club:
This October we have started a Rosary club because it is the month of the Rosary.
At Rosary club we each have a Rosary to help us pray and remember moments of Mary's life.
Last week we focused on thinking about how Mary felt when the Angel Gabriel visited her.
The decade of the Rosary helps me get closer to God and Mary by holding the beads and being present.
I like Rosary club because it only takes a few minutes to reflect and pray as one.
Written by Hannah & Kornelia (Yr 4)
Nursery: In Nursery we thought about how God made our beautiful world and everything in it. Including us! We thought about how much God loves us because He made such a wondeful word. We read the story of creation and made some fantastic art pieces.
Reception: In Reception we have been learning about the story of creation. We retold the story using props and drew pictures of the wonderful things God created. We have been learning that God loves each one of us as a unique person. We drew pictures of ourselves and thought about what makes us special and unique. We learned that God loves us and we are part of a family. We then drew pictures of our family. We also learned about how we enter God’s family, the Church, through Baptism. We looked at photos of our own baptisms and talked about the special people and the special objects. Then we acted out a baptism using the resources.
Year 1 have been learning about the Creation story and how God put humans on Earth to look after his Creation. They focused on the Nicene Creed’s words “I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of Heaven and Earth” and worked in groups to create artistic representations of the Creed. They listened to Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ and reflected on what actions harm the Earth, and what actions help the Earth. They have put their learning into action by making bird houses, litter picking, making posters encouraging others to care for the world, and spreading kindness wherever they go, and they have gone on a “God Hunt” around the school grounds, looking at the beauty of Creation.
This term in Year 2 we have looked at God's creation and thought about how we could be Stewards of God and help look after our environment. We read the story of Noah and the ark and discussed why God sent the flood and why Noah was saved along with the anmals. We created some art based on the story and thought about how the rainbow was a sign of God's covenant with Noah.
We read Psalm 139 and thought about what each of the lines mean though drama.
We have also looked at the sacrament of Baptism. We explored the signs and symbols of baptism and we all took part in a role play making sure we used the correct wording and actions.
This half term, Year 3 have explored the first account of creation in the book of Genesis as a powerful poetic narrative that reveals Christian beliefs about God as Creator. We have reflected on the idea that Creation is a gift from God, declared ‘good’ and that humanity is made in His ‘image’ and ‘likeness’. These beliefs have invited Year 3 to explore the action of human dignity, equality and the importance of gratitude for creation through prayers, Psalms and artwork. Through scripture and church teachings, we have deepened our understanding of God’s goodness and the call to care for the world and each other.
Year 4
In year 4 this term, our Catholic Social Teaching was Care for Creation. We learnt about being good stewards and how important it is to care for creation. We learnt stories that encourage us to love, have faith and hope. Stories of Abraham and Joseph inspired us to love other people and to have faith in God that he always has a plan for us. We learnt how important it is to love our neighbours as we love ourselves and that helping other people is a good way to show love. We enjoyed role playing the story of Abraham and making posters of how we can take care of our world.
Year 5 started this half term by looking at the story of Moses and the Burning Bush. They drew their own representation of this and explained the key messages from the story around this. They then started to explore different covenants in the Bible and the significance of these. Their main focus was the covenant that was made at Mount Sinai which we know as the Ten Commandments. They designed their own stone tablets out of clay and to demonstrate their understanding of these. The next focus on sin and throughout these lessons, Year 5 were able to make some thoughtful links back to their own lives. To finish off this half term, they looked at the cardinal virtues and how these support us to live good and happy lives.
In RE this half term, Year 6 have been learning about the origins of creation and original sin. We focused on the second creation story in Genesis and explored the story of The Fall and original sin. We explored how Baptism is the first sacrament of the forgiveness of sins and looked at symbols relating to this. Furthermore, we studied the meaning behind the Nicene Creed and the Laudato Si, making links to scripture. We completed the unit by discussing how religious and scientific beliefs around creation can complement each other.
The month of Mary
O blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Walsingham, Mother of God and our most gentle Queen and Mother, look down in mercy upon us, our parish, our country, our homes, and our families, and upon all who greatly hope and trust in your prayers. Amen
Angel of God
Angel of God, my guardian dear,
To whom God's love commits me here,
Ever this day, be at my side,
To light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen
Father Kevin has asked the school community to learn this prayer. It would be lovely if you could continue to say this prayer at home.
Special Prayer for Pope Leo XIV
Following updates regarding Pope Leo XIV's health and surgery, the Catholic Church in England and Wales has invited the faithful to offer special intercessory prayers for his recovery, entrusting him to Christ and invoking Mary as Health of the Sick.
Lord Jesus, we entrust to You our Holy Father, Pope Leo, as he recovers from lung surgery.
Grant him the grace of serenity, and guide those who care for him, that they may act with wisdom and attentiveness. Grant him a swift and complete recovery, freeing him from all suffering.
Mary, Mother of the Church and Health of the Sick, protect him under your mantle and be at his side at every moment.
Amen

To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears Turn then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us, and after this exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us o holy mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
