Dear Middle School Parents,
The school year started fast and furious, at least for me. With a great (and large!) group of students in Middle School this year, I've been extra busy getting to know your students, using our data to give them the support they need to make academic progress and trying to inject some fun into math! Thank you so much for making the extra effort to meet with me at conferences. I depend on you as an important part of your students' learning support team! It was such a blessing to meet each and every one of you. My plan is to update these newsletters monthly so you know what your students are learning and to give you resources to continue that learning at home. Together we can build strong and lifelong math explorers.
A little bit about me, especially for our new families: I grew up in Wisconsin, the daughter of a math professor, went to college at the University of Notre Dame and graduated with a degree in Honors Math and Secondary Education. I also met my husband there, Deacon Patrick Hirl, who now teaches Civil Engineering at Benedictine College and is assigned as a permanent deacon to Campus Ministry. I earned a Masters Degree in Elementary Education from St. Catherine University in Saint Paul, MN. Deacon Pat served in the US Navy Submarine Force so we have lived in Connecticut, northern Virginia and Indiana, where he returned to Notre Dame to earn his PhD. We raised our four children in Minnesota for 24 years and moved to Atchison in 2023. I've worked as a stay at home parent, an actuarial assistant, a statistician for an environmental engineering firm, a director of religious education for our parish and a high school math and science teacher. When I'm not teaching, (my second passion, after my Catholic faith), I enjoy reading, needlework, playing board games, gardening and cooking.
Please do check EduConnect with your student for any missing work. I will remind them to get those missing assignments turned in before the end of the quarter, October 16. If you have any questions about missing assignments, please reach out.
As always, I welcome and look forward to hearing from every family. Please do not hesitate to email or call me with any comments, concerns or questions. I answer emails within 24 hours, but not after 5 pm and not on weekends. I am happy to meet in person as well.
