Physical Education

Grading - PE RATES

Physical education grades are based on homework, quizzes, and a class evaluation. The class evaluation is based upon a 15 point rubric. Each category (R.A.T.E.S.) has a 3 point value. A student must meet all expectations of the category to receive all 3 points.

R - Responsibility- preparedness, procedures, safety rules

  1. Student wears appropriate gym uniform as dictated by student handbook. (Sweatshirt and tee shirt are expected for winter uniform) On dress down days students wear sneakers and dresses appropriately for physical activity

  2. Enters and exits class appropriately

  3. Follows school rules for safety drills ( fire drills, lock downs, etc.)

  4. Quickly and quietly stops all activity on the whistle of other STOP indicator

  5. Uses all equipment safely and carefully

  6. Cleans up all equipment promptly and appropriately when given general directions to do so.

  7. Follows all classroom procedures on a daily basis

  8. Controls movement with regard to safety of others

A - Attitude, Respect, Sportsmanship

  1. Willingly and happily works with any student in class

  2. Fully includes all group members in any activity

  3. Encourages all group members in any activity

  4. Does not put down others in class

  5. Participates honestly and fairly

  6. Can take a leadership role but also allows others an opportunity to take a leadership role

  7. Always acts respectfully during team games or cooperative activities regardless of outcome

  8. Always has a positive attitude

T - On Task, Following directions and rules of activity

  1. Listens attentively when directions are given

  2. Follows multiple directions for activities the first time they are given.

  3. Stays focused on task without interfering with others

E -Effort and Participation

  1. Participates fully and appropriately in all activities

  2. Puts forth best effort in all activities even those activities they do not like or are less skilled in.

  3. Challenges his/her self when opportunity is given to do so.

S- Skills and Concepts

  1. Can demonstrate cues to skill being taught

  2. Attempts to apply new strategies and techniques during activity

  3. Tries to assist others with techniques and strategies

  4. Grasps and remembers rules to activities and can explain them to others

  5. Understands and can explain components of physical fitness as well as fitness principles
