It is hard to believe that this is our last week of school. The year flew by. I truly enjoyed being your child's ELA teacher this year. Thank you for your support this year! I hope everyone has a great Summer with family and friends.

Thursday, December 20th: To begin class, we will do a read aloud of Danny McGee drinks the sea. Then, we will do our final December writing prompt before we leave for break. The students will bring their December writing journal home today and there are three extra entries that the kids can work on over break if they choose to. The students will not have homework today!

Tuesday, December 11th: We will begin class with a read aloud of What Pet Should I Get? Then, we will do a final read of Tara and Tiree with partners around the room. To end class, we will continue working in the Tara and Tiree Review packet. The students will have homework tonight.
Wednesday, December 12th: We will begin class working in our Voyages grammar book. We will attend church from 8:45-9:30. When we come back from church, we will do a brain break and then write in our December writing journal. The students will have homework tonight.
Thursday, December 13th: We will have our Tara and Tiree Reading test today. After we complete our test, we will do a brain break and then write in our December writing journal. The students will have homework tonight.
Friday, December 14th: To begin class, we will do a read aloud of The Storm Whale. Once we are finished with our read aloud, we will complete the Tara and Tiree writing prompt. We will attend mass at the end of class. The students will not have homework tonight.
Monday, December 3rd: We will begin by reviewing our class rules that we wrote at the beginning of the school year. Then, the new RL will be passed out. We will do our 1st read of our text of the week, Tara and Tiree, and identify the characters, setting, and plot. Then, the students will be able to participate in their class reward due to the whole class working together to get 50 marbles for good behavior since the beginning of the year.
Tuesday, December 4th: We will begin class with a read-aloud of A Different Pond. Then, we will do a Spelling Pre-test which I will use to identify the words that we need to practice before Thursday. This pre-test will not be for a grade. We will do a 2nd read of Tara and Tiree.
Wednesday, December 5th: Since we will be attending all school mass, we will begin with a Voyages workbook activity and then do a read-aloud of I'm Not Just a Scribble before we attend mass. We do a spelling review when we come back from mass for the rest of class.
Thursday, December 6th: We will have our Spelling Test today and our Spelling Menu will be due today. We will do a read-aloud of The Bad Mood and the Stick. We do a 3rd read of Tara and Tiree.
Friday, December 7th: Ms. Wardell will collect the weekly RL to begin class. We will begin our December Writing Journals today. We will do a read-aloud of It Came in the Mail. We will end class working our Voyages Grammar Workbooks.
Monday, November 26th: No School due to the snowy weather conditions!
Tuesday, November 27th: We will practice our lines for our play that we will be presenting on Thursday of this week. Ms. Wardell will pass out the RL for this week. We will do a read-aloud of Thelma the Unicorn. We will review classroom procedures (how we walk in and voice levels in class). Then, we will have our first play rehearsal of the Strongest One to ensure that all of the characters know what scenes they are in. Once we have finished our play rehearsal, we will complete pages in our Voyages book. To end class, we will do a read-aloud of Enemy Pie.
Wednesday, November 28th: We will review our code word for the week in ELA and then have a second play rehearsal of the Strongest One. We will presenting our play tomorrow. Then, we will do a read-aloud of After the Fall (How Humpty Dumpty Got Up Again).
Thursday, November 29th: We will begin with reviewing our class rules again and revising them from the beginning of the year. Then, we will present our play to Mrs. Haberkorn's class. Then, we will do a read-aloud of Lexie the Word Wrangler.
Friday, November 30th: To begin class, we will have play discussion and then Ms. Wardell will collect the RLs. Then, the students will work independently on Voyages pages reviewing concepts that we have discussed. To end class, Ms. Wardell will introduce the chapter book, Gooney Bird Greene by Lois Lowry and we will discuss the genre.
Monday, November 19th: We will work with the 5th Graders to read Thanksgiving stories and write poems.
Tuesday, November 20th: We will continue working with the 5th Graders on Thanksgiving Poems and will read with them.

Monday, November 12th: We will complete Voyages activities on Writer's Workshop, watch Mrs. Haberkorn's class put on The Strongest One, participate in a Read-Aloud of the Strongest One to present the parts that make up this play, and end class with a BrainPoP! activity on Facts and Details! Ms. Wardell will pass out the RL for the week.
Tuesday, November 13th: The students will complete an activity where they choose their top 2 parts and write why they chose their parts. The students will practice reading the lines. The students will find out their parts on Wednesday. We will end class with a November Writing Journal Prompt reinforcing the importance of capital letters and end marks!
Wednesday, November 14th: During class today, the students will find out their part and create their costumes. We will attend church during class. To end class, we will continue working on our costumes.
Thursday, November 15th: We will begin with 5 minutes of quiet reading before our Spelling test. Then, we will complete our Spelling Test. The students will be given extra time if they need to finish their costumes. We will use the rest of time to review the lines and speak with expression.
Friday, November 16th: Today, we will attend 2nd Grade Mass.We will review our lines that the students have been practicing at home. We will present our story on Monday! Ms. Wardell will collect your RL today!

Wednesday, October 31st: Happy Halloween! We will be complete various literary halloween activities! It will be a spooktacular day in Reading class!
Thursday, November 1st: Spelling Menu is due. Spelling test will be given in class. We will do another read of A Walk in the Desert. We will discuss character, setting, and plot within our story.
Friday, November 2nd: Comprehension Review for test on Monday on our story! We will be attending 2nd Grade Mass from 8:45-9:15. From 9:30-10:01: Ms. Malloy's 5th Graders will be coming down to our classroom to read with us!

Monday, October 22nd: Ms. Wardell will pass out the RL for this week and will collect the RL from Friday. We will complete a sentence fix it activity to begin class. We will begin working with inflected endings and complete a worksheet to follow-up our introductory lesson on these endings.
Tuesday, October 23rd: The students will do a partner read of our story for the week, A Walk in the Desert. We will continue discussing inflected endings and where we see these words in books. To end class, we will work on our ability to comprehend with a text based comprehension activity.
Wednesday, October 24th: We will work with Declarative and Interrogative Sentences in class today. We will do a 2nd read of our story for the week with an audio reading to appeal to all learners. We will practice our AMAZING words and identify them in context in our story.
Thursday, October 25th: We will have a fun Writing Workshop Day! We will be working with Brief Reports today. We will completed Reader Notebook page 40 and then the students will have the opportunity to work on their reports. Then, at the end of class, we will digitally learn through the use of the iPads on instructional applications, Epic! and RazKids!
Friday, October 19th: We will begin class by revising our reports. During our Friday ELA blocks, the students will profreed their papers and a peers paper. They will add a picture to their writing. To end class, we will use of BrainPop! Video to learn more about Main Idea. The students will write a sentence that encompasses the main idea of their reports!

Monday, October 15th: Ms. Wardell will pass out the RL for this week. We will complete a sentence fix it activity to begin class. The students will take the writing portion of the Henry and Mudge story to end class.
Tuesday, October 16th: The students will take the rest of the Henry and Mudge story test today. The students will have extra time to finish their writing portion from yesterday once they have finished the test. We will review our spelling words for the week and do a read-aloud to end class.
Wednesday, October 17th: We will review our Spelling words for the test tomorrow. We will begin to work on inflected endings and complete an activity highlighting these words and their endings. We will complete a KWL chart based on our next text, A Walk in the Desert.
Thursday, October 18th: We will have our Spelling test and the Spelling Menus will be collected at the beginning of class. The AMAZING WORDS will be focused on and the students will complete an independent activity on worksheet p. 37. To end class, we will do our 1st Read of A Walk in the Desert.
Friday, October 19th: We will not have ELA today since we have Service Day and an 11:50 dismissal. Have a great weekend :)

Monday, October 8th: No School!
Tuesday, October 9th: Ms. Wardell will collect the Reading Log from last week. Ms. Wardell will pass out the Reading Log for this week. We will dive into Realistic Fiction and the students will be able to apply their understanding by writing a realistic story about a time when they or a character watched something in nature. We will practice working with consonants. We will do a popcorn read of our text, Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night. Once we have finished reading, we will answer comprehension questions regarding our story. We will end ELA with a comprehension activity with a passage.
Wednesday, October 10th: Ms. Wardell will introduce our new Reading seats. Then, Ms. Wardell will read the story to the students, Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night. The students will have time to continue working on their practice writing time. To end class, we will complete a predicate review based on our previous knowledge.
Thursday, October 11th: The students will be asked to bring their Green Reading Books home where they will read our feature story, Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night for homework. We will practice vocabulary from the story. Then we will learn about the Big Dipper and the Little Dipper. We will develop an understanding of their similarities and differences based on the details provided in our text and from outside sources, like instructional videos.
Friday, October 12th: The students will be asked to bring their Green Reading Books home where they will read our feature story, Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night to prepare for our test. Ms. Wardell will pass out the Spelling Words for Next Week. The students will demonstrate their understanding of Realistic Fiction through their writing on the Henry and Mudge Writing Prompt activity. This actvity will be graded and is a part of the Reading Test.
Question of the Week: What can we discover by exploring nature?
Monday, October 1st: Ms. Wardell will pass out the Reading Log. Since we do not have school Friday or Monday, I will collect this Reading Log on Tuesday, October 9th. We will discuss and reflect on the question of the week. We will learn about consonant blends through small groups and independent practice. The AMAZING words will be introduced and the students will practice these words by creating sentences relating to our words and feature text.
Tuesday, October 2nd: The Spelling words will be introduced and the students will have the opportunity to practice using these words. Ms. Wardell will introduce the High Frequency words from our story as well. We will complete a reading comprehension activity to end class.
Wednesday, October 3rd: We will begin our first read of our story, Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night. Ms. Wardell will do a read-aloud of a similar text and the students will demonstrate their understanding in their answers of the critical thinking questions provided. After mass, we will dive into Realistic Fiction and the students will be able to apply their understanding by writing a realistic story about a time when they or a character watched something in nature.
Thursday, October 4th: Due to our 11:50 dismissal, we will have shortened ELA block. The students will have a spelling test. I will collect the spelling menu activities. To end class, we will begin learning about predicates and keep working on realistic story we started yesterday.

Question of the Week: What can we learn by exploring space?
Monday, September 24th: Today, Ms. Wardell will pass out the Reading Log that is due Friday. Ms. Wardell will re-introduce our story, Exploring Space with an Astronaut. We will review our key vocabulary, high frequency words, and AMAZING words. Our focus will be on Long Vowels Vce. This week, we will be studying sentences, expository nonfiction, and subjects.
Tuesday, September 25th: We will begin class with a creative writing prompt. We will be using our Voyages book to aide in our study of sentences. We will popcorn read our story of the week and answer comprehension questions from the text.
Wednesday, September 26th: We will complete an Read-Aloud in Youtube of our story of the week. We will work on a instructional packet focusing on our long vowels, sentences, and subjects. To end class, we will review our story to be ready for our Reading Test tomorrow. Remember to study our story!
Thursday, September 27th: We will begin class by taking our Reading test over our story of the week. Once we are all done with our test, we will complete a Brain Break. To end class, Ms. Wardell will do a read-aloud on the carpet.
Friday, September 28th: Ms. Wardell will collect the Reading Log to begin class. Make sure that the Reading Log is brought to class to turn in! We will be using the iPads as instructional tools in order to enhance our reading skills during our class today! Ms. Wardell will pass out the Spelling list for next week spelling test and menu.
Monday, September 17th: Today, Ms. Wardell will pass out the Reading Log. Your student should have received a Pearson Realize sheet from me in class Monday. This sheet contains the username and password that your child can use to log into the online portal of our textbook. The students will complete a vocabulary cut and paste with key vocab from our feature text of the week. We will end class with a creative writing prompt.
Tuesday, September 18th: We will begin class with writing the spelling words of the week on whiteboards to practice the procedures that occur when we take our spelling test. Then, we will complete a Rainbow Writing activity regarding these words. We will complete a concept talk video and response regarding our story of the week.
Wednesday, September 19th: Today, we will begin with working on an grammar and mechanice activity in our Voyages workbook. Then, we will do an online reading of our feature text and answer critical thinking questions based on our reading. We will practice our spelling words today so that we are even more prepared for our spelling test, which is tomorrow!
Thursday, September 20th: We will begin with our Spelling test. When we take our spelling test, it is vital that we are quiet and using our thinking brains! Ms. Wardell will collect the spelling menu that is due today. We will complete an activity in our grammar and mechanics book. We complete our 2nd read of our feature text.
Friday, September 21st: Ms. Wardell will collect the Reading Log to begin class. Make sure that the Reading Log is brought to class to turn in! We will be using the iPads as instructional tools in order to enhance our reading skills during our class today!

Monday, September 10th: Ms. Wardell will pass out the reading log for this week. We will review our spelling and amazing words for the week. We will then work together to create a concept map regarding our question of the week. To end class, the students will practice their handwriting and grammar skills when they respond to a writing prompt that Ms. Wardell will post on the board. The students will have homework on Monday.
Tuesday, September 11th: Today, we will dive deeper into our understanding of our text, The Twin Club. The students will create their own sentences using the spelling words based on their understanding. The students will gain a deeper understanding of our Amazing words through two activities. The students will have homework on Tuesday.
Wednesday, September 12th: We will review and recall our spelling words. The students will read our text, The Twin Club with a peer in order to dive deeper into our story. They will work with their partner to observe key details and then present their findings in a small group setting. We will end class with a creative writing response prompt, focusing on handwriting, grammar, and mechanics.
Thursday, September 13th: Ms. Wardell will collect the spelling menu based on our spelling words of the week. Then, the spelling test will take place based on our spelling words of the week. Ms. Wardell introduce the new spelling words for next week. However, the spelling list will passed out in class on Friday. In order to acquaint ourselves with the words, we will complete introductory activities to gain an understanding of our spelling words.
Friday, September 14th: Ms. Wardell will collect the Reading Log to begin class. We will end with our reading of the Twin Club on Friday. We will walk through the test for the Twin Club together as a way to introduce the students to the procedures that we must follow when we take the tests for the upcoming stories. Ms. Wardell will introduce personal narrative writing and the characteristics that go along with this type of writing. Have a great weekend with your family and friends!

Friday, September 7th: Ms. Wardell will review spelling menu instructions and spelling list, Choral Read activity, and introduction of Personal Narrative Writing.
