Handwriting Helpers

When you are doing homework with your child and they are writing words please encourage them to say how to make  the letters as they write them.  I am including what we say as we write the letters to help out.  Our "script" is adapted from Handwriting Without Tears.

A:  Start at the top, slant down, pick your pencil up.  Start at the top, slant down, pick your pencil up.   Pull across at the middle.

a:  Magic c, up like a helicopter, bump, back down, bump. 

B:  Start at the top, dive down, bump.  Frog jump!  Start at the top, curve around, curve around.

b:  Start at the top, dive down, bump, swim back up to the middle line, curve around.

C:  Start near the top line, curve up, around, up.

c:  Start near the middle line, curve up, around, up.

D:  Start at the top, dive down, bump.  Frog jump!  Start at the top, curve around.

d:  Magic c, up like a helicopter, keep going, bump, back down, bump.

E:  Start at the top, dive down, bump.  Frog jump!  Pull across at the top, pick your pencil up.  Pull across at the middle, pick your pencil up.  Pull across at the bottom.

e:  Hit the ball, run the bases.

F:  Start at the top, dive down, bump.  Frog jump!  Pull across at the top, pick your pencil up.  Pull across at the middle.

f:  Start near the top, curve up, around, down, bump, pick your pencil up.  Pull across at the middle.

G:  Start near the top, curve up,  around, up, give it a lip.

g:  Magic C, up like a helicopter, bump, back down through the bottom line, give it a hook.

H:  Start at the top, dive down, bump, pick your pencil up.  Start at the top, dive down, bump, pick your pencil up.  Pull across at the middle.

h:  Start at the top, dive down, bump, swim back up to the dotted line, hump over.

I:  Start at the top, dive down, bump, pick your pencil up.  Pull across at the top, pick your pencil up, pull across at the bottom.

i:  Start at the middle line, dive down, bump, pick your pencil up, give it a dot.

J:  Start at the top, dive down, give it a hook.

J:  Start at the dotted line, dive down through the bottom line, give it a hook.  Pick your pencil up, give it a dot.

K:  Start at the top, dive down, bump.  Pick your pencil up.  Start at the top, slant in, slant out.

k:  Start at the top, dive down, bump.  Pick your pencil up.  Start at the middle, slant in, slant out.

L:  Start at the top, dive down,bump.  Slide across at the bottom.

l:  Start at the top, dive down, bump.

M: Start at top, dive down, bump. Frog jump! Start at the top, slant down, slant up, dive down, bump.

m: Start at the dotted line, dive down, bump, swim back up and over, swim back up and over.

N:  Start at the top, dive down, bump. Frog jump! Start at the top, slant down, pull up.

n:  Start at the dotted line, dive down, bump, swim back up and over.

O:  Magic C, keep going, close it up.

o:  Magic C, keep going, close it up.

P:  Start at the top, dive down, bump.  Frog jump!  Start at the top, curve around to the middle.

p:  Start at the middle line, dive down through the bottom line, swim back up, curl around.

Q:  Magic C, keep going , close it up.  Pick your pencil up.  Give it a kickstand.

q:  Magic c, up like a helicopter, bump, back down through the bottom line, give it a tail.

R:  Start at the top, dive down, bump.  Frog jump!  Start at the top, curve around to the middle line, slant out.

r:  Start at the middle line, dive down, bump, swim back up, give him a cap.

S:  Start near the top, curve around, curve around.

s:  Start near the middle line, curve around, curve around.

T:  Start at the top, dive down, bump, pick your pencil up.  Pull across at the top.

t:  Start at the top, dive down, bump, pick your pencil up.  Pull across at the middle.

U:  Start at the top, dive down, around, up, bump, right back down, bump.

u:  Start at the middle line, dive down, around, up, bump, right back down, bump.

V:  Start at the top, slant down, slant up.

v:  Start at the middle line, slant down, slant up.

W:  Start at the top, slant down, slant up, slant down, slant up.

w:  Start at the dotted line, slant down, slant up, slant down, slant up.

X:  Start at the top, slant down, bump.  Pick your pencil up.  Start at the top, slant down, bump.

x:  Start at the middle line, slant down, bump.  Pick your pencil up.  Start at the middle line, slant down, bump.

Y:  Start at the top, slant down to the middle line, bump.  Pick your pencil up.  Start at the top, slant down to the bottom line, bump.

y:  Start at the middle line, slant down, bump.  Pick your pencil up.  Start at the middle line, slant down through the bottom line.

Z:  Start at the top, pull across, slant down, pull across at the bottom.

z:  Start at the middle line, pull across, slant down, pull across at the bottom.
