Smokey's aims to be a leader in the cannabis space, championing our community, our environment, and our people in all things that we do. We envision a world where the cannabis industry plays a major role in advancing science, environmentalism, responsible social adult use, and alternative healthcare options for all. We value diversity in beliefs and lifestyles. We believe in a welcoming environment for all regardless of path or journey. We believe in making the world a better place for all.

Smokey's is constantly working towards a more sustainable future. We are currently working on our zero waste initiative where diverted materials are reduced, reused, recycled, composted and/or recovered for productive use in nature or the economy. This includes both our cultivation and retail operations, where we strive to reduce the negative impact we have on the environment and our communities.

Our living soil cultivation practices many sustainable techniques, including the reuse of our soil/media and feeding our plant wastes back into the pots to become plant food. This leaf waste also acts as a food source for our worms & microbiology that live in our soil, along with many other soil amendments that we source locally from the Colorado entities. We use worm castings from a local company as a soil amendment, which are sourced from our excess plant wastes. We have recently added and are continuing to work on the addition of more efficient LED lights to our grow to replace less efficient fixtures and reduce our energy consumption. We also perform on-site composting or non-cannabis materials produced on site, such as paper towels, fruit and vegetable scraps.

We try to buy locally and support sustainable businesses here in Colorado.. We then encourage our guests to bring those containers back in for loyalty points on their rewards profiles. These containers are then treated and sterilized so they can be reused through Green for Green, a non-profit business from Boulder, CO.

We are making great strides in meeting our goals to live and breathe sustainability. As stewards of the cannabis industry, and our planet, we feel it is imperative to lead by example. We challenge others in the industry to consider making sustainable choices with their packaging, with efficiencies in order fulfillment, and by participating and encouraging participation in sustainability events.

Waste Minimization & Diversion

    • Smokey's has adopted a 90% waste reduction goal. This goal was established in early 2018. To date, Smokey's has made progress and increased the quantity of materials recycled. From March to December of 2018, Smokey's recycled 50.41% of their waste (of the 8,478.75 pounds of waste material, 4,273.78 pounds was recycled). In 2019, the recycled material rate increased to 59.79% (11,164.80 pounds of waste material with 6,675.03 recycled).

    • Smokey's composts most of the paper products they use. This is mostly paper towels. The paper products are composted on site and then used for landscaping purposes at Smokey's facilities.

    • All outbound packaging being sent to Smokey's stores/dispensaries is being done in plastic totes that are reused. This practice eliminates waste from packaging being used to transport products and has eliminated the use of approximately 120 bags/month in the transportation of flower alone.

    • a total of 161,340 pounds (80.67 tons) of soil diverted from landfill disposal annually.

    • We have dram, batteries, glass, gloves, plastic film, and ink cartridge recycling.

    • We reuse Ziploc plastic bags until they are unusable and then they are recycled. In our kitchens, we use reusable utensils instead of single-use plastic forks, spoons, and knives. We encourage our staff to bring reusable cups/bottles and think about recycling daily. We provide them education on recycling and composting best practices and provide resource information for local alternatives to the landfill.

    • Our 'doob tubes' are provided by Sana Packaging, a Colorado-based company, and are made using 100% plant-based hemp plastic, 100% reclaimed ocean plastic, and other sustainable materials.

Water Conservation & Quality

    • Smokey's estimates that approximately 64,925 gallons of water is saved each year due to decreased need for reverse osmosis water and elimination of the need to "flush" the plants during the last week of flower.

Corporate Social Responsibility

    • Smokey's has made process changes to sanitation practices that eliminated the routine use of kraft paper for each table top in the production areas. Tabletops are stainless steel and are cleaned using a hydrogen peroxide solution with biodegradable paper towels. This process change eliminated the need for kraft paper, thereby eliminating 950 pounds of kraft paper that was being purchased on an annual basis.

    • Smokey's is committed to developing and implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS).
