Denver International Airport (DEN) is the 5th busiest airport in the United States and 16th busiest in the world, serving more than 69 million passengers in 2019. In 2018, DEN was ranked as the best airport in the United States by the Wall Street Journal U.S. Airport Rankings poll. DEN has been touted as the place where the Rocky Mountains meet the world. The iconic tents are designed to capture the essence of the majestic mountain range. It’s perhaps this same vision that serves as the inspiration for being good stewards of the facility itself, the environment in which we operate, and our beloved Colorado outdoors.

Responsible Energy & Greenhouse Gas Reduction

    • Renewable energy source - Solar Photovoltaic.

    • DEN hosts 8 solar arrays, with 5 more (3 rooftop and 2 ground-mounted) to be installed in the next year.

    • Saved over 7.9 million kilowatt hours (kWh) per year by retrofitting and upgrading existing light fixtures.

    • Escalators in Jeppesen Terminal and the concourses are equipped with energy-saving motor controllers, resulting in an annual savings of 1.7 million kWh of electricity.

    • DEN provides 52 electric vehicle charging stations across the parking garages, lots, and the DEN parking lot at 61st and Peña Station.

    • Of the 1,681 assets in DEN’s fleet, there are 19 hybrid vehicles, 97 sweepers and light duty vehicles powered by CNG, 4 CNG buses, and 2 electric buses.

Waste Minimization & Diversion

    • Over 74% of all deicing fluid was collected, two-thirds of which was distilled and repurposed for industrial use.

    • In 2020, over 34,000 cigarette butts were collected.

    • Over 30 water bottle filling stations have been located throughout the facility to reduce plastic waste.

    • Added concessionaires to the DEN recycling program, this includes composting - 144 tons collected.

    • In 2020, DEN collected 30 tons of compost, recycled 88 tons of glass, and overall diverted over 1,571 tons of landfill waste through recycling and repurposing.

Water Conservation & Quality

  • As DEN continues to “refresh” the existing Concourses, standard fixtures within public restrooms are replaced with low-flow toilets and urinals

Corporate Social Responsibility

    • Donated 148,197 meals (or 177,836 pounds of food).

    • Collected 1,226 pounds of unused toilet paper and 361 pieces of luggage for the Denver Rescue Mission.

    • Donated gently used luggage abandoned by travelers to the Denver Rescue Mission - over 835 pieces.

    • Have four buildings on our campus with LEED green building certifications.

    • Partner with USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Wildlife Services, which provides full-time staff to conduct wildlife damage management at the airport year round.
