Art Teacher - Graphic Designer - Artist
I believe that a successful art classroom or teacher, allows students to develop their own ideas and artistic voice. The teacher has a fountain of knowledge however, their role in the classroom changes quite frequently. A great teacher is one that acts as both a teacher and a facilitator when engaging in a student-centered learning environment. One that supports the growth of their students by creating a safe and inclusive atmosphere. A place where ideas are welcome even if they may be perceived as wrong. The process of critical thinking needs this acceptance for idea development to be taught. Bad ideas only help inspire or teach one how to do something better, so how can they even be considered bad?
I want the students who leave my class to be able to gain a better grasp on critical thinking, time management, and foster an appreciation for all forms of art as they continue as lifelong learners. My students will gain this knowledge from each unit as we explore with an emphasis on group discussion, problem solving among peers, idea development lessons and sketch phases.
I am an Art Teacher, Designer and Artist. My story starts similar to many artists, with a love for the arts at a young age. I was drawn to creating instantly and luckily as I grew I was fortunate enough to have mentors throughout my life to help me on this journey. Before becoming an Art Teacher I was a Graphic Designer working in Buffalo, NY and London, UK. During my time in London I found myself designing for a non for profit company called Young Citizen. Their primary goal was to help the British youth learn how to be a productive member of society. Working on the design portion was fun however, it wasn't to long into that experience that I realized I could use my love of art to become a mentor for students similarly to the people who positively impacted my life in the past. Fast forward a few years and after working at Williamsville South High I was hired here at Starpoint! I'm very excited to be apart of this community and help grow this art department!
