BTEC Information Technology is a course that combines improving students' knowledge of ICT and Computing with developing a strong skillset for ICT. The course content can be grouped into 4 key areas:
Develop communication skills - be able to understand the impact of current and new technologies on the changing nature of communication in the modern world.
Design and development of original software (video games) - develop the skills required to analyse, design, implement, test and evaluate ICT systems.
Use of ICT by the student - be able to recognise potential risks when using ICT, use ICT safely, securely and responsibly and develop skills in different software.
Project management skills - learn how to manage a project from the initial concept through to evaluating the finished product.
The course has two units, both of which are assessed internally through coursework.
There are two assignments for this unit. Students will be given a task with a series of problems to solve. They will use different ICT software to demonstrate and develop their communication skills. Students will need to choose the software and then plan how to use it effectively. This unit is especially relevant considering how much communication has changed across the world in the past year.
There are two assignments for this unit. For the first assignment, students need to research and analyse the computer games industry and write a report about gaming trends. For the second assignment, students will be given a brief for a game they need to design. Students will research the brief and design a game. Students will then build and thoroughly test their game.
