Through the study of English Literature, you will be able to confidently:
read, interpret and evaluate texts
have an understanding of literal meaning, relevant contexts and of the deeper themes or attitudes that may be expressed
recognise and appreciate the ways in which writers use English to achieve a range of effects
present an informed, personal response to the material you have studied
Two examinations:
Paper 1 is 1 hour 30 minutes in total. This paper is worth 50% of the qualification and will focus on poetry and prose – there will be an extended question on each.
Paper 3 is 45 minutes in total. This paper is worth 25% of the qualification and will focus on Drama. It is one question on one text and is an open book exam.
Coursework Portfolio. This will consist of two assignments, each on a different text. This coursework is worth 25% of the qualification.
Show detailed knowledge of the content of literary texts in the three main forms (drama, poetry and prose), supported by reference to the text.
Understand the meanings of literary texts and their contexts, and explore texts beyond surface meanings to show deeper awareness of ideas and attitudes.
Recognise and appreciate ways in which writers use language, structure and form to create and shape meanings and effects.
Communicate a sensitive and informed personal response to literary texts.
