What will I study?

Through the study of English Language, you will be able to confidently:

• communicate clearly, accurately and effectively when speaking and writing

• use a wide range of vocabulary, and the correct grammar, spelling and punctuation

• both write and speak in a personal style with an awareness of the audience being addressed.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through three components.

• One examination that is 2 hours long in total. This paper is worth 50% of the qualification and will test your reading skills. There will be structured and extended writing questions which will be based on three reading texts.

• Coursework portfolio. This will consist of three extended writing assignments (non-fiction, describe, narrate). This coursework is worth 50% of the qualification and will test your writing skills.

• Speaking and Listening Test. This is separately assessed and will include an individual talk and conversation.

What skills will I be tested on?

Reading

Demonstrate understanding of explicit and implicit and attitudes; analyse, evaluate and develop facts, ideas and opinions, using appropriate support from the text; demonstrate understanding of how writers achieve effects and influence readers; select and use information for specific purposes.

Writing

Articulate experience and express what is thought, felt and imagined; organise and structure ideas and opinions for deliberate effect; use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures appropriate to context; use register appropriate to context; make accurate use of spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Speaking and Listening

Articulate experience and express what is thought, felt and imagined; present facts, ideas and opinions in a cohesive order which sustains the audience’s interest; communicate clearly and purposefully using fluent language; use register appropriate to context; listen and respond appropriately in conversation.
