Unit 1: Readers, Engage!

Dates of Unit: August 24th - September 4th, 2020

What are the big ideas or concepts that students absolutely need to get out of this unit?

    • Students will discern whether or not they would be interested in reading a particular book. They will identify what activates their interest, preview the first chapter of a book, make predictions about the plot, write a short blurb about what the general idea of the book seems to be, and discuss the book with peers.

    • Students will learn the protocols for discussion and practice them as this classroom will be driven by different “response to text” techniques.

    • Students will complete the beginning of the year reading and spelling screeners to set a baseline for their knowledge.

    • Students will set learning goals for the 1st nine weeks and an ultimate goal for year end.

    • Students will need to document the amount of pages they read per week to track their progress as independent readers.

    • Students will journal about the content they read to help aid in comprehension, stamina, and retention of the text.

Critical Reading I Standards:

    • [ER.1.CRI.1] Analyze personal literary interests by exploring and tracking reading preferences (e.g., peer and teacher reading conferences, reading logs/learning logs, surveys, self-assessments, personal interest inventories)

    • [ER.1.CRI.2] Set personal learning goals to develop silent and oral reading fluency, reading stamina, and active participation in group work

    • [RT.3.CRI.1] Participate in collaborative small and whole group settings, building on ideas of others (e.g., think- pair-share, Socratic seminar, give-one-get-one) / [apply protocols for discussion / listen actively / structure meaningful responses]

Strategic Reading Standards:
