Zaretta Hammond's book Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain looks at the neuroscience of the brain, and how the brain responds to safety, stress, cortisol, dopamine, and oxytocin. These hormones and brain activities directly affect teachers and students in the classroom. Hammond explains how teachers can access brain chemistry for the benefit of learning while creating safe, welcoming, warm spaces in our classrooms. This action of being a "warm defender" allows students to engage and push themselves to the uncomfortable places of learning.

Teaching focus - New Zealand school years 7 - 13 in NZ secondary schools and NZ area schools
Since 1986 I have lived in New Zealand and worked in many areas of the NZ education system. I spent 20 years as a secondary and area school teacher, deputy principal and principal and, since 2007 I have been the warden of three different residential colleges at the University of Otago. I will, hopefully, provide you with a broad overview of New Zealand's unique educational landscape across primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
