I am teaching a Black Studies course for the first time this year. In fact, it will be the first ever Black Studies course my school has offered in its 25 years of existence. The idea of this class came from my own frustration with not having a Black Studies class when I was in high school, as well as the emerging needs of my learning community. Given the effects of the pandemic, I have been reflecting on how schools can reimagine education as a space for joy, belonging, and connection, and how this shift in focus can cultivate educational equity. This presentation will walk you through the journey of the course, and how it has helped me rediscover my love for teaching and education. More importantly, you will be able to see some of the powerful student learning and reflection that has transpired thus far.

Catherine (Katy) Kavanaugh was raised by two educators in San Francisco in a big Haight Ashbury Victorian with one teacher's salary and international student boarders paying the mortgage.
Her classroom reflected the diversity of the neighborhood. Through Stanford, studies in Cognitive Development and Linguistics and a research fellowship in coordination with the renowned Berlin Film Festival helped her decipher what was going on with a more than 120K audience during the annual 10 day festival's children and youth section. She captured qualitative evidence with more than 150 respondents and 20 in-depth interviews with people who'd engaged annually with the film festival, revealing how vivid and long lasting their memories of international films were. Her thesis project gave her job as curator to a sixth grade San Mateo classroom and together they presented a film program synchronously in three locations and asynchronously to Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. Kavanaugh's handprints are on five of the ten US children's international film festivals.
