Incorporating Social Justice into NGSS Curriculum

Marloes J. Sijstermans (STEP 2012)

This session is a workshop designed for teachers to practice using resources and tools that can help teach science through a social justice lens. We will use Questions for Critical Thinking to reframe topics covered in our science curriculum and design performance outcomes that incorporate the three dimensions of NGSS and at least one social justice standard.

Anti-Racist: Connecting Mindset and Theory to Practice & Action

Connecting with Authenticity: A Tool Much Needed in Anti-Racist Instruction

In this session, attendees will review Rita Pierson’s Every Kid Needs a Champion and discuss main takeaways from the video. We will do a thinking exercise reflecting on how we show up in the classroom, both in person and digitally, as our authentic selves. We will address how our own identities impact our experience as educators and how our students' identities impact their experience. We will also explore vulnerability in the classroom, including why it is important and how modeling vulnerability helps students practice social emotional learning.
