About Us
Brain Day is an organization of students, led by Dr. Bill Newsome, that aims to educate and excite youth within the Palo Alto school district by bringing real human and animal brains into the classrooms.
Our mission statements are as follows:
Students learn interesting facts about the brain and how we acquire those facts (process of science).
Students of diverse backgrounds better identify with scientists
Stanford volunteers (you!) practice communicating science effectively to a general audience.
We partner with four schools within Palo Alto's school district, including Greene Middle School, JLS middle school, Fletcher middle school, and Ravenswood middle school, spending 1-2 weeks rotating through each class within the 7th grade. For each class, three volunteer TAs teach about the brain and empower the students by sharing their experiences in science.
We also bring brains to a number of outreach and educational events throughout the year, including Stanford SPLASH, Apogee Neuroscience Summer Camp, and others!
Our volunteer TAs come from many backgrounds and experiences, and range from undergraduate students, medical students, other graduate students, postdocs, staff, and even faculty!
