Pledge for Speech Equity
Because of the singularity of our own life experience within human society, we acknowledge that we are biased and pledge to do our best to limit the negative impact of our biases, as well as work toward reducing our biases.
We firmly believe that diverse speakers and topics, representative of the whole global health community, are essential for the quality of the seminars and more generally the quality of our work as scientists.
As organizers of the Stanford Graduate Global Health Network seminars, we pledge to
give the mike to those who rarely have their voice amplified. We pledge to choose diverse speakers representative of the whole diversity of our community.
quantify and reflect regularly on the representativity and diversity of our speakers.
For example, so far 53% of our speakers are women-identifying, 43% from low and middle income countries, 57% are junior speakers.
actively work on improvement by providing a platform for suggestions and criticisms regarding the choice of speakers and topics. Please let us know how we can do better!
Pledge for Climate Action
The average carbon footprint for a person in the United States is 15 tons, one of the highest in the world. To limit global warming to a relatively safe 1.5 degrees Celsius it is estimated that individuals must have a yearly budget of 1.6 metric tons of C02-equivalent emissions.
We acknowledge that, as inhabitants of a high income country, we are responsible for a large part of the global warming.
We pledge to:
minimize the climate impact of the Graduate Global Health Network seminar series
quantify and reflect regularly our climate impact
actively work on improvement by providing a platform for suggestions and criticisms regarding our climate impact. Please let us know how we can do better!
To minimize our impact on global warming, we rely on video-conferencing to avoid flights and travels. During the happy hour following the seminars, we serve vegetarian food and do not use single use plastics.
Thanks to these measures, we estimate that each of our seminars has an impact of 56kg equivalent CO2. As a comparison, a round-trip flight between the East Coast and San Francisco is emitting about 1.5 tons of Co2 (!).
