The Shoe Cleaner body was designed to be robust to support the weight of a user yet compact to allow for transport in a mobile home. This design choice of being compact motivated us to embed the electronics within the upper portion of the Shoe Cleaner to mitigate the possibility of failure due to mechanical disturbances. The space above the motor support panel houses breadboards for the break beam sensor, 5V supply chip, and motor logic as well as the wiring and the DC motors themselves. The DC motors were coupled to shafts which would rotate round brushes to facilitate cleaning.  The motors themselves were secured with 4  x  M4 screws.

The 5mm IR break beam sensor was the sole component that sat at the base of the enclosure to accurately detect foot placement. Holes were placed in the back panel and motor support panel for wire routing.

The Shoe Cleaner was constructed from laser-cut Duron (1/8"), which was chosen for its material strength, ease of manufacturability, and low cost. To modify Duron's rustic appearance, the Shoe Cleaner was painted with teal spray paint. A 1/2" Birchwood base supports the bottom panel of Duron to minimize bending during transport. A felt fabric layer was secured to the base to facilitate additional cleaning of the shoe sole.
