Ed, who has been teaching the ME 218 Smart Product Design series for 31 years, is eagerly anticipating new adventures beyond the limits of the Stanford bubble and has acquired a motor home to make berth anywhere, at any time. Excited as he may be with his new vehicle, Ed cannot help but notice the lack of "smart" features incorporated into it. Non-mobile homes now feature products that automate everything from opening the windows to folding clothes, but it seems that the motor home market for "smart" products has been forgotten!
Our team, unwilling to let Ed return from teaching "smart" product design to an adventure-filled life filled with "dumb" chores, have decided to focus on designing a semi-autonomous shoe cleaner, SHOE-18, for Ed to clean his shoes after a long hike to avoid bringing dirt into his brand new motor home.
30-60 second task
Display of passage of time
Error/timeout condition after 20 seconds of last user input
3 distinct user interactions and 3 distinct displays of feedback
Large scale motion in at least one of the interactions
At least one analog input
At least one non-contact sensing interaction
Clear audio and/or visual indication of degree of completion
PIC32-controlled electronic components
Introducing the SHOE-18, the ultimate smart shoe cleaning device designed for the modern adventurer and the everyday worker. This innovative gadget is a game-changer for anyone who frequently finds themselves with dirty footwear, be it from hiking trails, construction sites, or urban exploration. With its advanced technology, the SHOE-18 can tackle varying degrees of dirt and grime, ensuring your shoes always look their best.
The SHOE-18, as a two-part system, offers an innovative approach to shoe care and maintenance:
The control box is designed for user-friendly operation of the SHOE-18. Beyond allowing you to activate the cleaning functionality, it guides you through the operation process, offers the option to adjust the cleaning brush speed based on your shoe's dirtiness level, and provides real-time updates on your cleaning progress.
This is where the magic happens. Simply insert your shoe into the box, and it will detect your foot's presence. When the cleaning is activated, the dynamic brushes on both sides will start cleaning your shoes, effectively cleaning varying levels of dirt and debris.
Cleaning your shoes couldn't be easier with the SHOE-18. In 4 easy steps, you can get those crusty, musty, dusty, rusty stompers reshoevenated.
Simply insert your shoe into the cleaning box, and it will detect your foot's presence.
Adjust the cleaning brush speed based on your shoe's dirtiness level. Then press the white button to confirm your choice.
Press the green button to activate the 30-second cleaning session and watch the magic happen.
At this point, the cleaning is done. Remove your shoe and repeat the process with your other shoe.
