This course offers a broad overview of the role of finance in society and equips students with the tools to make informed financial decisions throughout their lives. Through case studies, historical examples, and basic analytical tools, students learn how to approach key personal finance topics such as budgeting, saving, credit, investing, insurance, housing, taxes, and financial planning. The course also explores common financial pitfalls, the institutions individuals interact with, and the societal implications of financial choices. Designed to be practical and accessible, the course is aimed at helping students build confidence in navigating real-world financial decisions.
Topics include making a financial plan and budget, managing money, obtaining and using credit and loans, saving, investing in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs, and other assets, venture capital and private equity, purchasing insurance, purchasing vs. renting a home, getting a mortgage, taxes, inflation and inflation protection, financial markets and more.
