Policy Implications of an Anthrax Attack A lecture presented by Lawrence Wein, February 26, 2003. Despite the fatal anthrax attack in the U.S. mail in 2001, no government response plan exists in the event of another attack. Research by Business School Professor Larry Wein and two colleagues recommends the rapid deployment of antibiotics and a series of other precautionary steps to reduce the death toll in the event of an attack.

2-Fingerprint Border ID System Called Inadequate. Washington Post, October 19, 2004. According to this news story, Congressman Jim Turner (D-Tex) wrote that a study by researchers at Stanford University concluded the two-fingerprint system (instead of one that relies on all 10 prints) “is no more than 53 percent effective in matching fingerprints with poor image quality against the government’s biometric terrorist watch-list”–Turner criticizes the system saying it falls far short of keeping the country secure. Turner’s letter to the Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge quotes GSB faculty member Lawrence Wein, who said his study found that at best, with a software fix, the two-finger system would properly identify only about three of four people, and that the “implications of our findings are disturbing,” according to this story.
