FAQs [English]

When and how will I receive my payments?

You will be paid 4 times during this study with each payment in the form of a $50 visa gift card. These cards can be used anywhere that you can use a credit card, even for online purchases! You will receive these payments at the halfway mark and end of each study period for a total of $200. You can pick up your payments at the Nuestra Casa office at designated times. Your first payment will be available on March 1 from 2-7pm at the Nuestra Casa office. You may leave the study at any time and will still be paid for the length of your enrollment.

Do I have to use my tablet to complete my Mini-Observations?

No, you do not. As part of the project, the research team provides each household with a tablet that is yours to use to complete your mini-observations. We want to ensure everyone has easy access to the mini-observations, but you can use your phone, laptop, or any other device to access the weekly surveys!

Why are we submitting 3 Mini-Observations a week?

Three observations a week may feel like a lot, but each of these is important! We want to see how much your water appears to change during the week and how your mindset may change from day to day. The more responses we get, the better we can find patterns within your home and make comparisons between homes.

Why Are we getting 2 water samples each study period?

These tests help us understand what is in your water and compare between different times. We are doing this so you can know what is and is not in your water and so we can compare those results to your Mini-Observations. The results will be available to you at the end of each study round.

Why do we need to get water samples in the morning?

We will be testing for lead in your water and the best way to do that is to get water that has been sitting in your pipes overnight so we want the first water from the faucet. If we were unable to get the first water from a faucet in our first sample, don’t worry, we will be getting more samples in the future! We also want to try to get water from a faucet that you usually use to cook with, drink from, or brush your teeth so we can know what water you use in your day-to-day.

Why do we have a study period in the summer and winter?

Sometimes water quality can be different in the summer and winter depending on the pipes, your water sources, and other factors. We also want to see if your attitude towards your water is different in different seasons.

How is my privacy being protected?

All information and pictures you share in the Background Survey and Mini-Observations will be kept confidential so that they cannot be traced back to you. None of your individual data will be shared with your landlord, water provider, or the city unless you specifically share it with them. If you came for the evening on-boarding sessions, other participants may know that you are participating in the study. If you have any specific privacy concerns please let us know! You can email Nuestra Casa at environmentaljustice@nuestracas.org or Allisa Hastie from Stanford at ahastie2@stanford.edu.
