THE BLACK EXCELLENCE IN BIOSCIENCE CONFERENCE

2024

MISSION OF STANFORD BLACK BIOSCIENCES ORGANIZATION

The Stanford Black Biosciences Organization (SBBO) is committed to building a strong community of Black bioscientists in the School of Medicine in conjunction with the greater Black community at Stanford. A mission built on the African proverb “it takes a village.” We believe the best way to do this is through integrative programming. Our events are open to all Stanford students, postdoctoral fellows and affiliates. Research has shown that trainees of color are more successful in higher education when connected to their community further validating our village principle.

We are committed to planning events that encompass but are not limited to:

·     Sponsoring academic research talks by Black researchers

·        Community building and fellowship activities (tailgates, holiday parties, and more)

·        Lunches with faculty and industry scientists

·        Tours of biotech companies

·        Mentoring of black undergraduate researchers

·        Advocating for the wellness of the black community at Stanford and beyond

BLACK EXCELLENCE IN BIOSCIENCE CONFERENCE

The biosciences have historically excluded people of color from engaging in research in academia or other career fields, establishing formidable barriers to their participation. These barriers result in the lack of representation within the biosciences, which black students often interpret as being space that people of color cannot occupy.

With the Black Excellence in Bioscience Conference, SBBO aims to create a space where black bioscientists across fields can share their research and connect with early career scientists.
