This Field Seminar is not just about visiting the Galapagos Islands or learning from Prof. Durham. It is also about learning together with current Stanford students and alumni travelers. It is about engaging with them and considering their priorities, issues, realities, life experiences, and viewpoints. Participants are encouraged to learn about current thinking at Stanford on diversity, inclusivity, privilege, and student wellbeing, and to do their part to help students feel comfortable and supported.
Why sign up for a Stanford Field Seminar with Sophomore College?
The reasons people travel with students and alumni are as varied as the needs and interests of the participants involved. However, an overarching theme is the tremendous satisfaction that comes from being engaged in a meaningful partnership that supports learning and personal or professional growth with Stanford students and alumni, who are often extraordinarily talented. To meet the needs of an evolving and multi-generational grouping of people (including Gen Z, Gen X, Millennials, and Baby Boomers), field seminars have evolved as two-way learning opportunities, with students and alumni across generations gaining from each other skills, expertise, and new perspectives as part of the process.
Remember, it takes time to build a reciprocal, trusting relationship, and every alum-student relationship will be unique based on the personalities, goals, and experiences of each given pair. Demonstrate that you respect each other’s perspectives by listening and sharing what you are learning from each other. Recognizing that both contributors bring something to the table will help each participant feel more comfortable.
Our program operates based on the Stanford Alumni Association Code of Conduct. At the heart of this code is the principle of treating others with respect, integrity, honesty, and fairness.
