475 Via Ortega, Room 300 (3rd Floor), Stanford, CA 94305
By Invitation Only | Registration Required (by November 7)
The Center for Fuels of the Future, the Stanford Center for Carbon Storage and the Stanford Sustainability Accelerator, with support from the Rocky Mountain Institute, invite you to join us for our Decarbonizing the Steel and Cement Industries Workshop on November 18th and 19th 2025. This workshop will bring together speakers and participants from industry, government, academia, and non-governmental organizations to discuss critical issues related to decarbonizing the steel and cement industries.
Collectively, the Steel and Cement sectors produce about 5 Gigatons of CO2 emissions per year, roughly 15% of global CO2 emissions. The emissions stem from both the chemical processes as well as the fuel combustion required for these energy intensive industries.
Workshop Goal: Share lessons learned across hard to decarbonize sectors (specifically steel and cement) and identify areas where research is required to remove bottlenecks within the value chain. The goal of this workshop is to bring together participants from industry, academia, NGO and government to discuss options for decarbonizing the Steel and Cement value chains including lessons learned, latest technologies, financial and policy frameworks. We will actively assess where there are critical research gaps and create an opportunity to brainstorm on pathways to decarbonizing these sectors and begin establishing collaborative solutions that will be funded as seed research projects at Stanford University.
Workshop Objectives:
Enhance industry/academic collaboration to ensure research is addressing real world problems
Identify technical, commercial and policy challenges
Actionable outcome(s) from Workshop: Create an opportunity for faculty and industry to brainstorm on pathways to decarbonizing these sectors and begin establishing collaborative solutions and prepare proposals for planned awards of four $60,000 “flash projects”.
In addition, the Center for Fuels of the Future event will be held on November 17, and the Stanford Center for Carbon Storage Annual Meeting will take place on November 20th.
Invited guests will receive location details in a confirmation email after registration.
