Pastoral Letter by Deacon Mark Purdome
"We are the face, the voice and the love of God when we comfort the sorrowful."
Friday, September 15 was the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows. Traditionally, this memorial commemorates the seven sorrows in the heart of Mary as recorded in scripture, starting with the prophecy of Simeon at Jesus' presentation that Mary's heart would be pierced by a sword. The devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows follows the seven times we see Mary sorrowful in scripture, and it has been a popular devotion since Pope Pius VII extended what was once a local feast to the whole church in 1814.
But the memorial doesn't resonate with me because of a particular devotion on my part to Our Lady of Sorrows, but because my mother was named Dolores, meaning "sorrow" or "pain". In 1930, the year my mother was born, it was the thirteenth most popular girls' name, being given to 13,000 or so babies that year. I've always wished I had asked my grandmother why she chose to name her first-born child "sorrow". Or perhaps ask my mother, who died in 2003, if she knew why the name had been chosen. Maybe it was just popular fashion, or maybe there were more hidden meanings. I'll never know.
All of this leads me into a meditation on what it means to be sorrowful. From a religious perspective, being sorrowful is our suffering when there is grief, sadness or mourning. It may be due to the death of someone we hold dear, betrayal by a friend, feelings of being alone or abandoned, a deep disappointment, unfair treatment, a disability, and a myriad other set of things that trouble us. We know that both Jesus and Mary were sorrowful. We know that we, ourselves, are at times sorrowful. All of these things are a natural part of life, especially when we love and care deeply.
Our understanding of suffering, of the pain and devastation that we've experienced, leads us to be more compassionate people. Meditating on our own sorrows helps us to better understand the sorrows of others. Just as we know that Jesus was fully human, and so understood our ups and downs at a visceral level, we who have experienced sorrow understand the depths of compassion that we're called to show others.
The news is full of places where our compassion toward the sorrowful is desperately needed. Immigrants in Chicago, residents of Morocco, victims of war in Ukraine. Spend some time reflecting on Our Lady of Sorrows, on your own sorrows, and on the sorrows of the world, and then use that reflection to recharge your compassion.
We are the face, the voice and the love of God when we comfort the sorrowful.
KofC Intellectual Disabilities Drive
September 16 and 17, after all the masses, the Knights of Columbus will be outside of church collecting for their Annual Intellectual Disabilities Drive. All of the funds collected, except for the cost of the candy, go directly to organized groups that service the needs of the intellectually disabled and learning disabled in local parishes, such as parish Spred programs, as well as community and Park District groups and the Special Olympics. Stop by to help out a good cause, and get yourself a Tootsie Roll. To donate online visit our page web https://tinyurl.com/KnightsID2023 or scan the QR code.
If you would like to donate 1-2 hours of your time to volunteer for our Drive, please contact GK Tom Kaiser at 630-699-2079 or TJKaiser@sprynet.com for info.
