Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time
"All good giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights." James 1:17
The parish office's hours are 8:00am to 7:00pm Monday thru Friday, from 9:00am to 3:00pm on Saturdays, and from 9:00am to noon on Sundays.
The parish offices will be closed on Monday, September 2, 2024 in commemoration of the Labor Day holiday.
"Vow not to just avoid the "bad" list, but to actively work on the skills and actions needed to build the common good and make the world a better place."
What a list we see in today's Gospel! Evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. It is easy to see how these items made the "bad" list. I think all of us would agree that none of these traits are appealing, not in ourselves and not in others. And while we all might occasionally stray into this territory, I think we all do a pretty good job of staying away from these obviously bad personal characteristics.
But if we look closely and examine what these things have in common, we might find some traits that are a little closer to home, ones that might make us a little more uncomfortable.
As Gerald Darring points out, the law of God forbids all those things that set people against each other. Things that rip apart the fabric of society. Things that are counter to the common good. This doesn't mean that we don't disagree with one another, or that we don't occasionally have hurt feelings. But the basis for God's society, the very core of Jesus' teaching, are the norms of the covenant: reciprocal responsibility, mercy, and truthfulness (USCCB, 1986).
When Jesus listed the things that defile, he didn't list a single violation of ritualistic laws. Instead, he listed those things that harm others, that denigrate and defile and separate. And unfortunately, in our lives and our society, we don't have to look too far to see those forces at work. It is much easier to worry about someone breaking a rule (like the Pharisees and hand washing) than to live in reverence for all of God's creation, caring for the environment, the migrant, the poor, and the hungry. Often times, we struggle to even admit that those things that make us uncomfortable are even a part of God's creation.
So, pat yourself on the back about avoiding the things on today's list. But not too much. Go deeper. Look at the subtleties beneath the surface, and vow not to just avoid the "bad" list, but to actively work on the skills and actions needed to build the common good and make the world a better place.
Peace!
