Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
"The word of God is not chained. Therefore, I bear with everything for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus." 2 Timothy 2:9-10
Next Sunday, October 16, 2022 is the anniversary of the founding of Saint Andrew Parish. After the 9:00am Family Mass, parishioners are invited join in our fellowship as we cut a birthday cake in honor of the parish.
"We are made with the limitless possibility to grow every day, every week, month and year."
In my work with Saint Andrew Parish, I tend to be rather private about my personal life. There isn't too much that I am trying to hide so much as I've personally been turned off by pastoral leaders who project their personal lives into everything, especially when they do so as pretense for self-righteousness. I try not to be shy about my personal life. I also try not to broadcast it.
So it was a bit of a dance last year when I got married and didn't make a big deal of it. This past weekend, my spouse and I celebrated our first anniversary and we spent a lot of time talking about our first year together. With her permission, I thought I might write about it in this week's letter.
Even then, I thought of all the reasons I shouldn't write about it. After all, it was only one year. Many parishioners have many more years on their resume. I'm a rookie. I also fear that my insights may not respond well to my fellow parishioners whose marriages are struggling or that fell apart. I don't have all the words to address all the unique challenges that life presents.
And maybe that is exactly what I have to say. My first year of marriage has piqued deeper integration of my core self by leaving me powerless before my own self-understanding. I learned very truly that I don't have all the words, all the answers, and all the solutions. If a philosopher's wisdom has previously taught me, "I am a mystery to myself," then the gift of marriage has humbled me to see that I'm a mystery to my spouse as well, and she to me.
And in this mystery, I am grateful to have grown. Here is where my pastoral sensitivities diverge from my own experience a bit. I wish not to indicate that marriage is the only way to grow. I only wish to give gratitude for and assert that my marriage has led me to grow. I am well aware of marriages that are not facilitating individuals to grow and even aware that it has been the leaving of a marriage marked with pre-existing impediments that has led others to grow. The landscape of time and space that God has given us is far more complex than the mapping of my privileged position. I've known individuals to grow more because they have chosen to not marry (as priests in our tradition do), or because they traverse with many tears the death of a parent. Some grow more when they first become a parent, or when they walk away from an abusive friendship.
My first year of marriage inspires me to comment on the gift God gives us as time-bound organic creatures. We are made with the limitless possibility to grow every day, every week, month and year. The interaction with others in our life give us the opportunity to ripen fully if we embrace this benefit.
This possibility is magnified when we allow God to participate. God's healing and provocation, comfort and critique, are multipliers to the full becoming of self to which each of us is called. My witness to you and my encouragement to you after my first year of marriage is a simple prayer. May the following of your heart lead you to become all that you are and more than you can imagine, with the help of God.
It may be back in everyone's memory, but the Wearin' the Green 2022 was an enormous success! Fr. Sergio has written a letter to parishioners detailing how the money has been allocated and the work of the finance Council and the Facilities and Construction Committee which have been hard at work in putting our community resources to good use. Please view under the "Stewardship and Finance Report" to see the specific totals that gave a net income of $342,000 for last year's Wearin' the Green. Thank you to everyone who made it possible!
