The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed
The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed
"The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them." Wisdom 3:1

On Saturday, November 1, we celebrate the Feast of All Saints' . A day to celebrate all those who have faithfully completed their earthly journey. We honor them, recognizing them as guiding lights and companions on our faith journey. Ordinary men and women whose lives give testimony to the love and mercy of God for all of humanity.
As a child, I admired the saints and longed to be like them. I was curious about how they transformed from ordinary men and women into saints. As I grow up, I've gained some insights into who are sinners and who are saints, and the transformation that brought this about.
I feel that sinners live in the past, unable to start anew; saints live in the present, always ready to begin anew. "Sinners living in the past" means they are bound by guilt, shame, and past mistakes. This attachment to the past prevents them from seeing hope, making it impossible for them to live in the present.
"Saints living in the present" signifies acceptance, active forgiveness, and a state of liberation from the burdens of history. The present is always a fresh beginning, a blank slate, for anyone who chooses to embrace it. This is the core of today's Gospel. Poverty of God, mourning, and persecution for righteousness' sake are merely temporary states in life; they are not static. Hope for the future empowers them to break free from the constraints and fetters of the past. This power to "start anew" doesn't come from an external gift, but from an internal choice of perspective—choosing to let go of yesterday and act in the present. It is an "encounter between our weakness and the power of God's grace." It is not about personal heroics but about letting God’s love and the Holy Spirit transform us.
The late Pope Francis once said that holiness is not the privilege of priests, nuns, and hermits, but the privilege of all people. When we fulfill our daily duties with love, strive to support our families, care for the sick and infirm, live with boundless hope, love, faith, and patience, we can all join the ranks of saints. It is doing the extraordinary in the ordinariness of our daily lives.
In light of the current reality, Pope Francis challenges us to act with kindness especially towards those who are on the margins of Society for example immigrants, refugees, the poor and those who don’t have a voice in our Church or Society. All the saints have one thing in common, they recognized Christ in those who suffer. For Pope Francis, kindness towards those who suffer and are rejected by Society is not only a human virtue but also a fundamental expression of holiness and a concrete manifestation of the Gospel commandment of love. Today as we honor All Saints we pray for their blessings and the grace to follow their example.
